Pod Fan Woes!

Woody

Hello all.

After this weekend and noticing everyones Pod Fans work, I've decided to try and get to the bottom of why mine don't!

I've not yet physically tested the Fans with a direct feed but I have shorted out the Engine Bay Temp Switch with no luck. Before I wire-in a switchable system, is there a relay somewhere in the original system for the Fans?

I'm thinking this may be at fault, as I'm doubtful that the ECU could take the full Amps to run the Fans. I'd like to think a signal from the Sensor would tell the ECU to send a minimul amp signal to a Relay to enable full current to flow. :s

This might be of some help but I've no idea which fans these relays operate. I recall my garage were making my side fans work and fitted 2 Fan relays to my car way back in 2007. No part numbers were on the invoice though.

Interesting find James, cheers. Where exactly is this diagram in the Tech Manuals?

Cheers James.

Notice number 17 relay is called "Side admission ventilation fan relay" might be it.

In the Phase 2 manual it's called "Side intake engine cooling fan relay (black)"

Right. I have voltage at the Ambient Temp Sensor and with the wires shorted out I have voltage at the relay. Fault finding continues!

Along with a good friend of mine who is an Auto Electrician, we proved that both fans do work. However Relay No 17 pictured above has 4 groups of wires feeding it. 1 Common Earth, 1 supplying two Fan power leads, 1 power input from Ambient Temp Sensor and 1 other Earth consisting of two small grey wires. With the two small grey Earth wires removed from the relay block and the relay refitted, the now vacant earth pin shorted to the Chassis, hey presto the fans kick in! [smilie=yay.gif]

We followed the two small grey earth wires through the loom and the large elect plug, which lives near the nearside top strut mount. They then disappear down underneath the chassis behind the driver’s seat. The next time we saw these wires reappear was under the bonnet; they then disappear back into the dashboard :s

So my plan is to make a small earth link from the relay to the chassis and then monitor the car for any adverse electrical spooks! :)

PS, has anyone got a complete wiring diagram for the Ph1?
