They do twist off, but not on a thread. Its more a method to ease removal.
The gearknob has a plastic sleeved insert that fits into the gear knob, this is then pushed down on to the metal toothed shaft. The teeth create the grip and hold the gear knob in place.
It is a very tight fit and requires a lot of effort to fit and remove.
Problem is that the plastic sleeved inserts aren't reuseable so beware when you buy a new or second hand gear knob and make sure the insert is included and unused.
