Phase 1 Steering Wheel Changes

Hi,

Just wondering if people could post a few pics up of what steering wheel swaps they've carried out on their Phase 1 Vee's? I'd also appreciate any info you can give regarding what parts were required to make it work.

I appreciate a number of people have done the 197/200 swap in Phase 2 cars but what's the score with ditching that horrific Phase 1 wheel?

The first thing I did to my Ph1 as soon as I got it was to swap the horrible aftermarket steering for a 182 wheel from RDP

Chris, based on Danny's swap to a 182 style wheel...I presume that therefore means a 197/200 wheel could be fitted to phase 1's also!

The 1*2 wheel, like the standard phase 1 wheel, is not exactly well regarded for its longevity

The thing I found difficult about sourcing a replacement wheel was trying to find one WITHOUT the cruise-control buttons for the Ph1. Most 182/192 wheels that Paul from RPD found all had the CC buttons. Also finding an airbag to fill the CC button space on the wheel gave Paul some fun and games.

Sabelt is a great upgrade, I do like the original but its fairly big. Not sure on part No. but im sure Renault Parts Direct stock them? You need a boss for them too

Thanks for those guys. So to fit a 182 wheel I'd need what exactly? Does any one have a guide or some part numbers?

Is it a straight swap or some modification required?

I do like the 197/200 wheel but not sure it'll fit with the slightly retro Phase 1 interior. Sabelt is awesome but I don't fancy headbutting one in a crash. Any idea where you can get the white/silver Sabelt wheel?

I'm pretty sure that Sabelt has been custom recovered. I believe as standard they're a blue suede/alcantara in the top section.

I had the original wheel refurbished (well Will the previous owner did) to a really good standard. It doesnt melt in my hand and it has been refurb'd using matching leather.

I don't mind the way it looks but think it would feel better with alcantara where the rubber is.

197 Cup wheel up for sale over on CS at the moment. Could be good for a Ph1 owner....

Note that the driving characteristics change (for the better) when you change for a smaller diameter wheel. Something to consider.
