Hi Ed,

The phase 2 rear subframe i have here is different to your top pic. The top pic also still has a phase 1 toe control link.

I'm sure I read on here that some very late production phase 1 cars were fitted with a subframe with extra bracing. Certainly some of the strengthening looks similar to the ph2 item.

Top pic is a Phase 1 car with what I thought maybe a phase 2 subframe, certainly looks very similar to my Phase 2 subframe.
The toe control links are quite different in length.

Just for absolute clarity, in the OP, both the subframes are ph1.

TWR updated the ph1 subframe midway through 2001, they re positioned the track control arm inner mount in order to limit the toe change under roll, improving the cars predictability.

This probably is why the journos moaned about early ph1s and owners experiences vary! About 100 UK cars have the earlier subframe, the rest have the updated one.

Has moving that pick up inwards reduced the toe change under compression and droop?

Hi Brett

The later subframe has actually moved the pick up outwards almost in line with the bottom radius arm inner pivot so I guess it's created a more parallel linkage which I guess would reduce the toe change. Interesting that they made 100 or so UK subframe before picking up on what would seem pretty basic geometry. Maybe the rear wheel steering made these 100 the best of all vee's that can only be handled by masters of great age and experience!

Worldwide there are hundreds more cars with the early subframe. TWR were developing the ph2 at the time so probably came up with that mod after press feedback whilst developing the ph2 subframe.
Would be interesting to experience them both back to back on circuit to see if you can feel the difference. I’ve never driven one with the early subframe.

When I bought my Ph1 (‘02) it was advertised as having a Ph2 subframe. SG said it didn’t (without looking) - so I’m assuming it’s got a Ph1.2 subframe, hence the confusion.
