phase 1 gearbox trouble

I have a p1 clio and have just lost 2nd gear? I did call out the AA who said it wasnt the selector and it was internal. all the other gears work fine but when I go to put it into 2nd it makes a grinding noise then pops out...
Any ideas?

I have a spare gearbox in the garage if you need one - which you probably do!
