Ph 1 vs Ph 2

With the following what's a ph1 going to be like compared to the newer ph2?

Coil over kit, 18" oz wheels, spacers or correct offset to widen the track, full exhaust inc headers, cobra Misano seats and some form of performance inlet...

It won't get driven much but I do drive fast when I drive and it will go across to Germany like all my cars do...

Asking as there's a big price difference between the 2 and with the spare money I could sensible mod.... or just go for the phase 2?

I'm probably in a good position to answer: as I have a modestly modded Mk I and a (fairly) standard Mk II.

Tbh I like them both. I think the MK I puts a bigger smile on my face when I take it for wee a blast; but my unfettled MK II will be a better car to keep pristine and enjoy for many, many years to come.

I reckon most of the mods you've mentioned could cost circa £5k? Depending how much you pay for a ph1 it might end up costing a fair bit.

Like most thinks it'll depend on what you can pick a MK1 up for against what the cost of a MK2.............

With the mods you've mentioned, it would be a fantastic MK1, that's for sure.

Regardless of what type you get, you will enjoy it regardless and if your not the type to hoon it to with an inch of its life you might aswell leave the coilovers, inlet and headers. 18's on a ph1 does look great and a change of seats is needed in both ph1 and 2 anyway. (All clio's are shit in that department) Fitting an after market silencer goes without saying. There are a few on the market now that offer amazing sound with no draw backs of a boomy interior. Like I say, what ever you get, you will be happy. Might be best getting the ph1 and if the interior isn't your cuppa tea, sell it and get a ph2. Its not like you will loose money.

Despire the many minor tweaks, my humble opinion is that they are there or thereabouts the same car. The age gap gets less and less as time goes on, the early phase 2s are 10 years old now, the late phase ones are 11 years old.

Whilst i love both, after all these years i am still drawn to the phase 1 more. Maybe its because of public perception?
However i still believe If you can justify the extra 4k for a phase 2 then its worth it as its just a more finished package and it has more colour options! But, you do get alot more for your money with a phase one and i do think that a phase 1 v6 in iceberg is the most iconic of the lot.

To be honest, you dont even need to modify them. They are great fun out of the box.

You may find a car with the mods you desire on it anyway. For example, there was a phase which kept popping up on ebay last year (i dont think it sold), which sounded right up your street LINK

Spot on Duncan :approve:

Only thing I'll add is that the Ph1 does feel more raw if that makes sense. For instance I was suprised how different the feeling when changing gear was (long throw on ph1) with much more effort required compared with a ph2 that you could flick about with one finger! I'm not saying thats a bad thing more trying to highlight some of the subtler differences.

It came down to looks for me - I just can't get on with the front end of a ph2 - but as has already been said on the road there is very little difference between the two versions.

One other thing to add is that if you intend to modify try and ind a club car that has already been modified or partially modified. Keeps the costs down and, usually there will be a write-up somewhere of what was done, how and when.

Good luck. No matter which car you go for you won't regret it one bit :)

Cheers for the LINK. Dropped the guy a text as that is quite a sorted Mk1. Not sure on harnesses as too old for that now. [smilie=thanks.gif]
