Ph 1 tyre recomendation

Hello all

Just going to change all 4 tyres on my phase 1 over here in Ireland. Had a search of the forum but have been unable to find current recommendations.

Michelin seem to be the the order of the day, PS3's but what size is favoured.

Currently the car has older hancook and a dunlops with sizes:

205/50/17
235/45/17

cheers

I will stick with the sizes and go Michelin, thanks chaps. I did read some opinions on tracking and as mines is off a little I will get it done when the tyres are changed and wheels refurbished over the next few weeks. Any opinions on deviating from factory settings? I do like a spirited drive or two around the smaller (bumpy) roads near to me but will only get around to a couple of spins on tracks I would say.

I plan to keep the car original, it has a carbon airbox and white side repeaters but I will leave it at that. The steering wheel rim is in poor condition and rather than trying to find a new/ good used replacement I was just going to re cover in leather of a matching colour. Any thoughts on that re keeping it original?

I will be bringing it over to Scotland to have belts and other bits changed shortly (starter and whatever), she is running well but better to be safe and Im not sure when it was last done - certainly a good few years but not many miles. I will be looking to change whatever is needed or recommended when the engine is out - is there a list of recommended jobs to do during this time?

Great wee car and I have no intention of selling in the near future but if / when I do it will probably be sold in the UK so I want to look after her well ( not just because any prospective buyers will look here for info im sure!)

I drive it every other day and it has surprised me how many people know of the car and ask questions, Ive actually been asked twice if its for sale and been handed telephone numbers.

cheers

Sounds like you've got your head screwed on. I've been a Vee owner for a long time and would agree with everything you've proposed.

It's desirable to change the clutch with the engine out but they're currently unavailable... I'm sure some sensible alternative will be fabricated soon.

Re: steering wheel retrim
http://royalsteeringwheels.com or search out a chap called 'snappy' on cliosport.net - both are reasonable bets.

I would try Michelin PS3s

Front: 205/50 ZR 17
Rear: 235/45 ZR 17

I had them on my old ph1, they were a good all rounder.

With regards to set up, SG motorsport tend to adjust the settings to suit the drivers style. I used to run mine on total bog standard settings and it always felt really sure footed, but I know they can be improved if your driving is a bit more spirited. Sadly I don't recall how this was achieved.

Whilst the engine is out, clutch was normally the wise move, but as kett says their arent any at the moment.

Generally a good inspection is a wise move, you may notice a few jobs that need doing once its out. Have a read of this link to thread where it goes into a bit more discussion on the parts.

Thanks Duncan. The PS3's are being fitted today. Chap just called to say no tracking info on his machine but he has put a call in to renault and I will have a look around here. Strange that as it did have tracking info for my 1977 dino 308gt4 - thats much more common with 550 in RHD though.

The clutch issue is interesting as I got a verbal quote yesterday to include all belts and fluids, major service, starter and clutch and I mentioned lack of clutches, he was to get back to me today but I am still waiting.

I'd happily talk to TTV about a replacement clutch and flywheel package if you want to try it, i've done a couple of kits for 21's - it's a big initial outlay for a flywheel and clutch but its futureproofed and future clutch rebuilds would be cheap as chips. I think they do a flywheel already so it would be a simple repurpose to a different clutch bolt pattern and sorting out the release bearing solution as I would guess that the OE bearing would be too small.

I got PS3 at the front and PS4 at the rear. There werent any PS4 available in the correct size when I bought mine last year.
