....albeit and ex-F1 driver and ex-Le Mans winner: Porsche 917 vs Porsche 911 GT2RS Race

He still instructs to this day at Porsche Silverstone's Experience Centre. :salut:

Walter Röhrl is another elder statesman who is still affiliated with Porsche to this day - a brief biography for those who are interested: LINK (He still rates the 964 RS quite high up!)

Amazing that a 917 is surpassed by a road car (albeit a particularly well honed one). I didn’t see that one coming...

Having said that, PH reported this week that a road-going Honda Civic knocked time off Suzuka lap records for F50 & Carerra GT.

It shouldn’t be that surprising because technological improvements should be consigning older cars to the league-table scrap heap. However, there remains an element of ‘Objectophilia’ to revering classic cars as their capability has long been surpassed...although, it’s fair to say, for collectors the returns in investment is hard to ignore.

The V6Clio.net ‘special projects thread’ is a great example of some commendable efforts raising the performance bar for many ££££, whereas a 2020 Golf GTi will achieve 300bhp without turning a spanner.

My own experience of newer technologies in modern hot hatches (such as ‘clutch delay valve’) makes manual shifts less agreeable than the Vee. We’re very lucky to own such a cool, niche, esoteric vehicle...
