New V6 owner, few observations

Morning all,
Been a Vee owner for all of five days now. Still wearing a silly smile! I thought I would get down to the business of servicing it as one was due.Engine oil change nice and straight-forward if a bit messy, ditto gearbox. I used Mobil synthetic gear oil 75W 80 GL3/4 spec (and not cheap). Having read several threads on here about gear oil, I am still slightly nervous. The spec matches that for the Elf apart from the synthetic base (Ithink) Also took the plunge and visited my local Peugeot dealer, leaving with a set of six coils, at just over 29 pounds each.

They are now installed. Still to do is a brake fluid change, new rear discs and pads all round, probably some braided steel hoses and a coolant change ( the car is 3 and a half years old with 27k on the clock. Really not sure about the brakes. Every comment and review I have read told me how wonderful the brakes are. In my opinion(which is not worth that much ) they are good, but not outstanding. My last car (integrale) had a brake upgrade.I fitted 330mm Alcon rotors and Ali bells (floating) with alcon 4-pot calipers. At the rear, 300mm solid discs with standard calipers, braided hoses, Ferrodo Ds2500 pads all round and DOT 4 fluid. These brakes were outstanding. Very fade-resistant, brilliant from cold(vital on a road car) great feel and bite. They really encouraged late braking. And so to the Vee.....

I have ordered some new pads from K-Tec, but I think I have made a mistake, as I have ordered yellow stuff. Having looked at the rotors really carefully, the rears do need replacing and I guess a standard disc is the way forward. Does anyone here have any experience of the K-Tec front Ali bell/rotor that they have on offer? And another question, do redstuff bite hard from cold?I know that DS2500 pads worked very well on the Integrale. Any experience on the Vee? Any advice or comment would be gratefully received.

Welcome to Vee ownership!

Re the box oil. I had non ELF recommended gearbox oil in mine when I bought it and was not happy with the gearchange especially when cold from 1st-2nd. Swapped it out for the ELF stuff and was much better. Not sure why its different / special (other than the ELF oil stinks) for the box but it is.

My box has also just failed as in diff noises, cannot say its defo related to non ELF gearbox oil been put in the box by the previous owner but am suspicious thats the cause considering the box has given up the ghost at 18k miles.

The ELF stuff is 55 notes or so for 5 litres which is good for 2 changes so its worth getting the genuine stuff IMHO

Afternoon,
Thanks for the reply. The Mobil oil comes in at about the same price, if price is related to quality. I think that, despite the hassle, I will track down the ELF oil and use that. Is it available anywhere else besides renault dealers, as there are no dealers locally?

Hi Andy,

Re:Pads - I've got mintex all round and they have been great. Fairly cheap too.

Codes are on some threads on here if you do a search.

Matt.

Afternon all,
Update on the thrilling service saga. Got the gearbox oil from Scott (he is really helpful by the way. Also got me a set of plugs and some rear discs and the little green doobery that enables one to check gearbox oil level) Anyway, back to the plot. After I had used the expensive synthetic Mobil oil for the gearbox I did notice that, from cold, the change from 1st to 2nd was a bit stiff. Went away when warm. One week on, removed expensive oil and replaced with equally expensive oil but from an ELF 5 litre can. Result is night and day. No hint of stiffness from 1st to 2nd from cold. Conclusion; If changing gearbox oil, use the Elf oil. I have to confess that I have pulled a few cars apart in my time, rebuilt several gearboxes and never before encountered one which seems so oil-specific. Scott did tell me that he believed that the box was developed by TWR in conjunction with ELF. That might explain it. Oh, by the way, if your plugs have been in for 25000 miles or more, change them. Mine had done 27k and I was suprised at the amount of erosion of the central electrode. As an extra 'by the way' coils from Peugeot are 29 pounds each, part no. 597094.
Now I need to track down some Ferrodo pads (DS2500) Ktec are on the hunt; fit my new rear discs, braided brake hoses, do a brake fluid change and probably paint the rear calipers on the basis that they look pretty minging through those great OZ wheels.

I have ferrodo pads on the front and got them from demon tweeks. Give craig wood a call on 01978663056 - they might be able to help and you should get a discount

Morning all,
Update on the service front, having finished the job. I bought new rear discs and the yellow stuff pads. Up front I have fitted the Ds2500 pads with fresh fluid and braided brake hoses all round. Brakes still bedding in but first impressions are very pleasing. Lots of bite from cold and a very reassuring feel to the pedal. They really do encourage late braking! Only snag with the Ferodos is the dust...... they create lots.
