My first coil gone.....

Driving my mum to the garden centre this morning and the car started mis-firing just as I pulled into a petrol station to fill up.

Filled up with petrol and started the engine again.....the 'Warning light for monitoring exhaust gas' light is constantly lit and it continued to sound a bit rough during the sedate 2 mile mile drive to get it home. Done a search and mayne people have had the same, so I'm guessing it's a coil thats gone.

I'm guessing it'll be covered under warranty, but the annoying thing is that coz it's the bank holiday the Renault garage won't open until Tuesday.....and the guy I spoke to was in sales who couldn't book me in as the service guys lock their office when they go home at noon - typical.

A couple of question though.....

1). I was under the impression the main bad batch of coils were for the ealier MK2's....mines a 2005 so assumed they would be fine. Given that it's a 2005 car is it still likely to be the coils (given the description I've just said) or could it be something more serious?

2). I assume if I take it easy there wont be any permanent damage done if I drive it gently the 8 miles to the Renault Garage?

3). What kind of length job should it be? I'd like to stay with my Vee whilst it's done, so if it's the coils and they don't have to order any in.....whats an average time to hook up to the diagnostics computer.....diagnose which fault and change the coil?

Stupid bleeding coils.

Right I'm off to the garden centre in my mums car now so I won't be looking as cool :(

I'll post in the coils sticky if thats what it turns out to be.....

The mk2 coils are quite easy to change - when i had two go managed to get them both changed in around 25mins so Renault shouldnt need your car for long at all

Go easy driving the car with a coil down as excess fuel will be going through the cats and can cause damage if driven for a long time - a few miles down the road at low speed shouldnt be a problem though

Sounds like a coil.

Does not take long to change.

It would have been quicker to get a coil and change it yourself.

Bad luck.

I know - it's something i fancy trying but the last thing i need is for something to not quite go right and Renault start telling me they won't cover anything related under the warranty......plus that means having to spend the money to buy it and spend an afternoon figuring out exactly what to do.....I can take my laptop and work at the Renault garage so it's no biggy.

the dreaded coil strikes again [smilie=evil.gif]

If you have warranty get it down to renault, its a fairly quick fix,and they alway keep them in stock as they also fitted to laguna engine.
8 miles should be fine just keep the revs low as possible.

Hi Hun....

That's pants Nev if it's your coil.....we kinda had a brief-ish 'coil' discussion on our mini-meet today... :s :s but talking about coils on a meet, is almost like giving someone the kiss of death...!!!! YIKEY-YIKES....!! Like no-one wanting to mention the dreaded word...."Run to the hills I say and hide....!!!" [smilie=hide.gif]

Hope you get it sorted.....(I'm parched in the meatime waiting for this cup-of-tea-meet...!!!  )

So i guess i'll be due soon then, i tend to drive my car quite hard, ie: regularly reving it between 4-6 rpm, does how hard you drive the car affect when these coils go ?

OK I've phoned Renault and booked it in for Friday. They are however 'recommending' that I don't drive the car to them.

Hmmm, are they being over cautious and just convering their backs?

I'm now wondering if I should just phone the AA on Friday morning and get it towed there.....but that also puts rise to the possibility of the bumper getting scraped putting it onto the recover truck, plus possibly scratching alloys or even worse body work if they don't tie the clamps down properly.

Choices choices.

Drive 8 miles to the garage?
or
Get the AA to recover it to Renault?

Opinions much appreciated.

Ive driven to my local renault dealer on two occasions about 5 miles, with no problems. But bear in mind unburnt fuel going through your cats is NOT a good thing, i believe someone on here damaged theirs driving with a cylinder off and got a hefty bill a for new cat.

Good excuse to de-cat it I guess

All sorted and I must say I was very impressed with Renault Huddersfield.

Asked if someone could walk round the car with me to check for damage so I could prove if anything was damaged on the car it was them that did it. They were more than happy to this and walked around the car with one of those clipboard and diagrams of the car to mark down any damage (which of course there was none)....then they noted down the milage and I signed to say I was happy with the inspection.

Took 45 minutes from handing over my keys to going on a test drive with the mechanic....work completed - coil number 5 was the problem which was replaced free of charge under warrenty.

Whilst I was waiting for the paperwork the service desk person gave me a quote for my next service without me asking which was nice (£233 for a 2 year or 24,000 miles service) - though I'd get that cheaper as I'd supply my own oil.

Great stuff......my Vee purrrrring (growling!?!?) like it should.

If you had a spare coil could have been all O.K. in 0.5 hours.

how about that and very little time lost.

To me time is money.

Yep - me too, time is money - but it only took them 45 minutes as opposed to 30 minutes of my own time. Driving there and back took me 15 minutes so in total from leaving home to arriving back just over an hour. I took my laptop and worked from the garage so I guess no time lost really. Plus I didn't 100% know it was a coil, and it was still under warrenty so if I'd have messed something up the warrenty might not have been covered.

Something I'd certainly like to do, but I got to check out the garage as well so I know I can trust them with my car.
