Ooooh busy times, my car is up on chocks, my trophy wheels have made their way to york for a refurbisfhment, will post some photos of before and after, then fiest week in july the car is going for a detail ready for the wedding. All exciting times.
Hi jim, my wheels have gone to ian jemison engineering in york, www.alloywheelrepairs.com, cost wise ill keep you posted, they are having a full refurb with some welding done on the rears due to cracks on the inner lip of the wheel, then being sealed and powder coated, looking forward to seeing the results, the rears had bubbled pretty badly and very rough finish, they should be back by the end of next week, ian has many years of working with and welding magnesium, many years working within the motorsport industry. He can weld them, straighten buckled wheels change offsets and pcd on rims too.Photos to follow.
pre detail pics, just rolled it out in the sun last week prior to whels coming off for refurb, just trying to get the wheel photos to upload but there too big... doh.
ah, got it, as you can see the finish has bubbled pretty bad, as you guys know they are a magnesium alloy wheel, they have gone off to be welded as one of he rears has cracked on the inner edge of the wheels, also then being powder coated with various stages to them, more photos of the finished wheels to come next week.
That's the problem with magnesium it's porous and reacts with moisture in air . Needs special treatment prior to primer/ paint. , had a couple race bikes with magnesium dymag wheels , same problems. Not really upto stress of normal roads.
Thats right, quite a process according to ian whos doing the wheels, they will be in the oven shortly for baking, they have been stripped already and cracks been welded, ian has a lot of experience from how he spoke on the phone, lots of rally and race car experience with magnesium, looking forward to seeing the finished wheels, they will be slightly darker in colour when they return.
There were wet painted phil, they were stripped but sat unpainted for a few days before paint, he ce they sptarted to oxidisse before theygot painted, they will be cured in the oven over a long time to remove any gasses left in the pourous metal..before being powder coated. Re you on the france trip this year..
Ah mr mossy, how are you, were going anthracite this time, will post up pic end of the week. Are you going to duxford for that there css meet, I think ill pop along as its not far for me to roll up there.
Ian is well know in and around York area , he is well know for his wheel repairs and alloy welding and not to sure if he is still builds and competing in rally competions anymore and used to build engines , I've used him loads of time and never had a bad word to say about apart from once when I send a gear box it to be repaired and when I picked it up he gave me it back in a box of bit, and only been 17 at the time I looked at it and said WTF am I suppose to do with that, your wheels will be spot on when you get it back, he's not the cheapest but you pay for what you get . Good luck m8
