Modified cars not for long

Read the discussion on Pistonheads about this. Insightful. The consensus is it's the usual EU bullshit that will be totally unenforceable not to mention nigh on impossible to regulate.

Worst case scenario each aftermarket part has to attain type approval so modifying will just get more expensive as aftermarket companies pass the cost of licensing on to us.

I've been reading about this idea for many many years, I am sure it will NEVER happen to the extent suggested.

Even in Switzerland where I understand some of the strictest rules already apply, modifications are allowed but with rigorous approval and certification of them - even then there are 'work-arounds'. I am happy to be corrected though from our European members as this is my recallection from a few years back from a Swiss friend.

Glad ive got a '59 Mini with every modification you could dream of.........feck the EU

You own a 59er?!?!?!

Yep. Ive had it dry stored for over 4 years now.

I agree with Martin. Theres ways of bending the rules. How many de-cated cars are driving around for instance?

In hong kong technically speaking its illegal to modify cars with everyone turning a blind eye

But recent fraud around MOTs means the test centres are now enforcing no mods to the letter

Meaning I had to swap my recaros to get an MOT,others have had to change theyre brake calipers back from upgraded items to oem!

So it' could be enforceable via getting an MOT but would it really happen?

Since your mini is over 30 years old your exempt from MOTs anyway !

What?!?!?! That's crazy! I've seen plenty of cars that age which are utter death traps. Mine certainly wouldn't pass a modern MOT here. Not because it dangerous but the emissions would be off the scale, its to damn noisey and its impossible to test the brakes due to the ride height.

The vast majority of vee's that have been modified are to a brilliant standard I'd say. Its not as if we see ill fitting japcans hanging off the back of them and cut springs to suit. I'd doubt many owners would have any problems even in the worst case. A copper would have to be pretty anal about cars to know the janspeed and quicksilver backboxes fitted to most car are infact not standard and that the 18" wheels fitted are.

I seem to remember someone saying that on the machanical side this is already the case in belgium
They can modify the appearance of a car but nothing mechanical.
Or maybe I mis-heard ...

What is going to happen when the manufacturers stop selling the OEM parts and the only option is the after market parts will we all have to scrap our beloved machines?

Simple solution ..... lets get the f*&% out of the EU  Half their laws are a load of codswallop that we have to introduce here. Last year on a driving tour whilst in Switzerland we were temporarily parked up for a re-group and bloke comes out of a garage and tells us to switch our engines off whilst we were temporarily stationary! Plant an extra tree matey ;) Bunch of boring fart bags in Brussels, earning a big fat wage thanks to us taxpayers, think they are doing us a favour, think they are doing the morally and ethically correct thing and get a high off their delusions of righteousness. I think we can manage ourselves and we can screw up the country without their help  And as usual the authorities surely more important things to sort out and police have more pressing matters to deal with than a modified car (which passes an MOT). Talk about stifling the creativity and ingenuity of individual people and the industry behind it. Hope common sense prevails in regards to this.
