Modifications and values

Gents.

How do we think modifications affect values in the current Vee marketplace?

I know there has been a shift towards people wanting original garage queen cars, but do the "right" bits on the "right" car still have appeal?

My car is a Mars red, never been damaged 27k mile car and wears its original paint with pride, yes it's got chips and the wheels need a quick refurb ideally but overall it's in top condition for a 13 year old car.

Mods are BMC filter and Spike Janspeed
Custom trimmed Recaro Pole position seats
Clio 197 steering wheel
KW variant 3 coilovers and H&R spacers

Pretty much everything I've done definately improves the drive of the car (the coilovers are a revelation) and yet won't appeal to the collectors out there.

I'm not planning to sell by the way, but with the way values are heading everything has a price, was just wondering if there is still demand for non standard cars?!?!

It's definitely a case for the Vee that modifications cost double...
...in terms of expenditure and loss of capital value.

On the flip side - firms like Singer have made good money from tastefully modifying 911's and charge a premium.

Your Vee is a delight and the modifications have been tastefully done. It'll be far more enjoyable for it.

Of late, James' Vee had very desirable aftermarket seats etc and still commanded a great fee.

I think there will be many different views on this topic and I'm sure standard ones will always be worth more (but) I think its nice if we make them to our own personal taste with in reason if we plan on keeping them .The mods you have done just improve on the car's ability and very easy to put back to standard if required.I have had mine ten years and only put an exhaust on it but I have just brought a roll cage off Ali and some Sabelt harnesses are going in it .i can always put it back to standard if I want .I think we should enjoy them and not worry to much about the value you could have a totally original one that lives out side in all weathers or one with a few mods that's always kept garaged waxed and polished I know which one I would go for ?

Good question Colin!

Easily reversible modifications with the original parts supplied would not affect values. But I do believe that modifications reduce appeal to anyone unfamiliar with the cars. A standard car will always be more desirable to buyers and hence fetch more money.

Certain modifications may add appeal to enthusiasts and hence add value.

As an example Recaro tread line seats appear to add value... But for top money, you would be wise to ensure the original seats are included.

Condition is more important to me when doing a valuation than modifications.

Nothing you've added would put me off buying your Vee Colin. In fact your additions would attract many new owners when they understand the bother and cost to add them very soon after if they bought a standard Vee.

Of course some additions will always be very wrong. Oh and as always having the Vee some sort of OEM colour helps. (Even grey)

I absolutely love your Vee & the mods are top notch! However I still think a collector would pay more for your car if it were standard.

That's pretty much what I was expecting to hear, I have the standard exhaust but that's it. I may start to scour around for a set of standard seats in the best condition possible, problem being these days is that most are likely to be out of a 182, which will have covered far more miles than 27k and finding a pair as good as the car may be tricky :(

I have the standard suspension (minus 2 springs Mr hope) ;)
Unfortunately I don't have the standard steering wheel or airbox though...

There are certain 'unused' Vees that should adhere to the unmodified principle...

...but given that many of the Vee's original replacement parts are no longer available - we shouldn't get too anal on this idea. The concept 'total OEM' now impossible.
(Anyone want my 12 year old set of Michelin Pilots? Lol!)

A little Botox enhancement is the norm.

So what have we got? Tredline seats that offer decent lateral support. Custom seat rails which improve the driving position. Induction kits and exhaust back boxes which save considerable weight and heighten aural delivery... etc, etc. Changes that are worth celebrating!

Furthermore, your Mars is worth considerably more than the sum you acquired it for. In that basis, you really needn't worry about residual value. Simply enjoy!

My ID AY looks pretty ordinary but underneath the surface I have these non-OEM features:

ColinG silicone hose BCA
Spike zorst
Trophy coils
RSTuning remap
Pilot supersports
Custom plaque

I also protect the front bumper lip with a Russosport splitter

IMO it's far better for these modifications.

I believe that's where the OEM+ phrase came from!

Ttv flywheel, ph1 clutch, quaife diff etc.. Great mods over standard.

I do like to see a standard back box though, mainly because so few have them.

I was a bit concerned with the mods on my LY before I saw and tried the car. The main thing I didn't like the idea of was the 4 point harness, as they are a pain when using the car for short blasts on the road. But the owner had kept the original belts in there as well, so it's the best of both worlds. I was also suspicious of the Tredlines, not realising they were such comfy seats. The induction kit and de-cat exhaust are just fabulous, and quiet when on a light throttle on the motorway, and the big discs work well. None of this mattered when the owner told me that he had all the old kit down to the last nut and bolt, and it all came with the car, with mint original seats that have hardly been sat in.

For me, the bottom line is that all visible mods have to be easily reversible, and the original equipment comes with the car. Then the car could attract a premium.

My Ph1 is standard apart from 2 mods. The gear linkage has been modified so that it feels exactly the same as a Ph2 to use, and I don't hit the dash with my hand when changing up to 3rd / 5th. A more recent mod has transformed the car for me. When hitting the brakes hard they always felt dead, almost as if the servo had failed. Then I discovered that the throttle pedal is much closer to the brake pedal on a Ph1 than the Ph2, and when hitting the brake I was also sometimes jut touching the throttle with my delicate size 12s. It was obviously designed for heal and toe with size 10 feet or less!!

Neither of these mods are easily reversible, but nobody would notice them either, except that the car is genuinely nicer to drive.. Oh, and the Ph1 brakes are fine now!

Question for Duncan:

How does Yorky's R5 Maxi Turbo value compare to OEM?

Is it a case that a real Maxi is outrageously expensive that a copy is not frowned upon too badly?
(Lovely car btw!)

So out of interest what sort of figure would I put on mine?

As I say £27k miles, full service history and belts done 2014 at main dealer. New brakes all round. KW's only 9 months old.

3 owner car, needs a little paintwork to perfect but cosmetically very nice indeed.

30k car now I'd say Colin. But hey 27k... Get some miles on it and enjoy it.

I would have still changed everything that I have even if it were to affect the value by doing so. It's my car, my memories etc. If I do sell, even modified I'm pretty sure I'll get more than double what I paid to buy it.

That's just it Iain.. I don't drive it enough, driving it means it gets dirty, which means it needs washed every time it's out, which means it's more than just opening the door, taking it out, sticking it away and closing the door. It becomes a chore, and I can't seem to change my way of thinking lol.. I'm bad enough with the M3 and its job is to be a daily!

Still safe, just been a bit busy to pick up the new ones :approve:

Your car is not per se modded as everything is readily reversible, mods that cause problems are things like chopping holes in the roof and fitting a sun roof or physically changing the components of the engine in an irreversible fashion or respraying in a non original colour, ideally a car should be in its original factory colour. As you say with seats, that could be a problem but in all honesty you wouldnt want OEMs when you have Pole Positions in of the quality yours are ( a set of OEMs thrown in would probably be all that is needed, condition pretty much unimportant!!) Snappy has spare wheels apparently so even that shouldnt be a problem :approve:

Anyway, you wont be selling so this is all hypothetical

PM Duncan. Ratified valuations are all part of the wonderful benefits of v6clio.net membership.

Original paint...............................really.........Not convinced! (Sure Alex painted the front bumper after Renault scraped it!)...
