Mk1 problems starting from warm

mk1 13000 miles,
I have no problems from cold starting, its perfect,
But if i go for a drive and get the engine nice and hot, then say go for a drink, come back to my car after about an hour or so, go to start it and the engine has to turn over about 20 times before striking up! Then stuggles to idle, you have to keep the revs up for a few seconds or it'll stall. This is worse on a warm day like today. Think it might be something to do with the choke maybe...

Any one had any similar problems? Any help much appreciated, this problem can be quite embarrassing.

I have the same problem, but was unsure if it was something to do with my decats.

It is a bit random on mine to not always but wen it does happen it is wen the engine is really warm (build up of heat) and left for a little while.

Still have not found a remedy tho yet.

Steve

Fuel vapourisation.

Seems to happen to some V6's but not others.

Again as a norm in hot weather.

Does your engine bay fan come on ?

Yes the fan does come on. Definatly has got somthing to do with the heat, but the problem only accrues when you leave it to stand for an hour or so then try to start it.

Try the following :-

Turn the ignition on but not the starter.

After 20 seconds, turn starter. This can work some times.

It could also be an indication that the fuel pump is giving up the ghost.

I also have this problem and would love to see if someone has a cure for it or whether it's a design fault.

Mine used to do this randomly. I had Renault and independant specialists tell me that it's fuel vaporisation - a known problem, and nothing can be done to fix it.

Fortunately mine would always start eventually....

Just thought I`d put my experience into the pot...

Just bought my vee, but noticed that it didn`t really like hot starting. Spoke to a mate of mine that is an RTE technician at Renault, and he sudgested that I gave the following a try:

Undo the two 10mm nuts that hold the coolant bottle on to the rear engine bulk head, and let it drop and rest on the gearbox. Under where ther bottle was is a small solenoid valve that controls the vent from the fuel tank. It has 2 rigid plastic pipes coming off it, and 1 electrical connector. Remove these connections and slide the valve off its mount (slide towards the drivers side). With the unit in your hand try and blow or suck through either hose connector. If you can blow through it, then it is faulty and needs to be replaced.

I tried it, and sure enough I could blow through it. Bought a new one (£25), fitted it and the car now starts no problems at all. :D

Sometimes its not what you know, but who you know!

Could you tell me the exact part number on the receipt?
Taken the control valve off this morning and can blow staright through it!!
Went up to the stealers to order a new 1 and they could not find it on there system and and now phoning Renualt UK on monday. In the mean time my car is in bits :( :(

Steve

I had to give the dealer the part number off of the old one, which then superseeds to a new number. The number is moulded into the solenoid valve, but you need to slide off the rubber hanger. Sorry, I don`t have the part number to hand... The receipt is at work, and I`m not there until Monday now. Sorry!

If you are still stuck on Monday, give me a bell at work: 01934750320 (Simon). :)

If anyone still needs the part number for the solenoid valve, it is: 8200 660 852. £23.71 + VAT retail.

Thats for a 230, not sure about the 255.

Thanks mate, Scott is sorting me out @ SG motorsport.

Get a bit sick of the dealers. They don't know much at all.

Thanks again. :approve:

Steve

Hmmm I need to find someone who can do this in the South, Reading area, any advice?

Update guys......

Re-fitted the new part this afternoon. I re-tested the new part as to Ryairs comments about blowing through the part.

It is alot more substantial on the new so im hoping it has cured the problem. Will be going for a drive over the weekend so i will see how it goes.

Thanks for the info Ryair :approve:

Steve

No problems dude!

£95 call out fee and £75 per problem there after...
Paypal accepted! ;)

Let me know if it sorts out your hot start though. Your emmisions should be a bit better now too, and your MPG should go up to. Result! :approve:
