Lighting help required

Have a MK1 V6 - picked up a set of real light clusters, Mk2.

Cannot just change over the covers as the bulb holders fix on in different places. So unplugged the bulb holders and plugged in the holders that came with the new set of lights - now all sorts of funny things happen - rear fogs not working, push the brake and lights on the dash come on faithly!

Put the old ones back on - now fine again - any idea that i was doing wrong??
