Been out today in the Clio (phase2) and early days getting used to the car but it feels like they have quite a heavy flywheel. Is this the case or are the internals quite heavy? Has anyone tried a lighter flywheel and if so did this I prove things and how so?
got the engine out of my phs 2 at the moment and the dual mass flywheel is broken, luckily i've got a spare phs1 single mass which i hope fits and works but even that weighs a ton!
The Flywheel is pretty heavy indeed but I think dual masses tend to be that way. As mentioned in another thread ph1 and ph2 are interchangeable as long as you change clutch and flywheel together. If you can believe the german forum the complete flywheel/clutch weights ind the ph1 16.8kg (flywheel: 10kg) whereas the ph2 weights even 17.5kg (flywheel: 12.5kg). An impressive weight in my opinion and also feels that way an the road. I'm in contact with Helix Autosport at the moment but they say their setup would weight almost 15kg which seems quite implausible especially since the flywheel should be 6.5kg. This are their specs got but they are in process to build such a clutch to weight it in the end. Unfortunately they are very busy at the moment...
We have a build spec but up until your email Helix had never been asked to actually manufacture one. As a result we have built the prototype clutch and it is currently on the test rig being examined.
Shaun has some logs from the original pre-production testing of Vees and there are some interesting comments about how the driveability of the car changed between a normal flywheel and a dual-mass one ...
I can't remember the details or comments, or even whether this was Mk1 or Mk2 (though I think it was Mk1), of the tester but it was VERY interesting.
Yeah I remember sitting at Shauns reading these. They were for a ph1 if I rember correctly. I remember reading that renault struggled initially with the dual mass flywheel and even at that stage it showed weaknesses. Like you say though Martin, they were a very interesting read and showed that the ph1's were far from thrown together.
I took some pictures of most of the pages from the books which I may have somewhere but think it would be a great set of knowledge for members to be able to see these in the knowledge base in future ... Maybe Shaun can organise the copying of these, if Scott allows this to be done, as I believe the books originally belonged to Scott and were on long term loan.
I've got a load of pictures and info on the differences between the mk1 and mk2 clutch/flywheel, i took a load of pictures a few weeks ago and weighed everything too
i have to say driving with the mk1 flywheel and clutch is WAY better than the mk2 (when fitted to the mk2), its not as refined, but is nicer in terms of driving and performance in my opinion, less likley to break too!
