Jack for V6

Hi Guys,

I would like to remove and detail my wheels soon (and hopefully paint the calipers while I'm at it).

Can anyone recommend where I can buy a good jack, as I have heard that the one that comes with the car is not ideal for the weight of the car (particularly for jacking up the rear)?

Cheers,
Phil.

I bought a 2.5 ton trolley jack from machine mart last year for about £25, does the job. If you'd be best to get some axle stands at the same time if you can find some cheaply...

Thanks for the links James/Grant.

Apart from the most likely difference of build quality between the 2, what is likely to be the main difference from a amateur use point-of-view?

Is it worth getting axle stands too, or can the car be left on the jack for a few hours while the wheel is getting cleaned etc?

Cheers,
Phil.

;)

Shoulda painted the brakes too :(

MIne was on the jack for an hour or more when I cleaned stuff behind the wheels. Everytime I see a car on axle stands I cringe, just looks like it's going to fall over.

Was up there for a few days James.

Believe me it took long enough for me to get it like that, thiefs would have got bored lol

From a 1 once a month use or less there will be no significant differences, if your doing it very often then one with a full sized handle you can pump while standing would be better.

Axle stands are worth it if you plan to do any work under the car, from a safety point of view if nothing else. If you dont plan to do this kinda thing i wouldnt bother, but personally i've found my axle stands very useful

Ok thanks for the advice, I'm going to be likely jacking the car up, removing the wheel and keeping it off for a few hours. Then re-attaching it and removing around until they're all done.

Is it ok to leave the car jacked for a few hours in one corner only?

Should be fine as you won't be jacking up the side much higher than the wheel would usually keep it. Saftey wise the jack should hold it ok, I'd check it every hour or so to ensure its not losing pressure but I highly doubt that will happen. Good luck!

Assuming you are using a hydraulic jack, it is only a rubber seal you are relying to prevent the jack from failing. Whilst i would be the first to admit i have used a hyd jack many times by itself i would never recommend to another person to use only a jack, unless of course you are willing to accept the risks. Axle stands can be awkward especially if you just working from the outside, you can always use a some blocks of wood, 4inch posts for example or other which can be stacked accordinly as a back up, these have good compressive strength, at least you have some reassurance

Thanks for your advice all.

I think I'll get a reasonably priced trolley jack, axle stands and also use some wood for backup... :thumb

I'm also getting some long 'nose' ramps made,( avoids front nose bumper damage on my Vee and R5) no good for removing wheels of course but ideal for lifting both or one side quickly and safely. I 've modified them so the ramp part can be removed just leaving the car raised on a 'stool', enabling better access under the car. Once they arrive i will post some pic's

Nice Mark, I currently use planks of wood to reduce the angel of the incline on my ramps, to get it up nicely (actually had to make them for my Clio 1.2 as the front bumper was pretty low!)
