Costs can soon add up once you start extreme modification, but maybe spread over a few years the costs get diluted ... I bet it's hard to stop too to avoid the 'unfinished project' label and sometimes people probably don't have an end goal in mind apart from car shows ...

That kit actually looks like it has potential ... if it had normal doors and in plain old liquid yellow it would look (dare i say it) quite nice... and i bet it goes quite well too
