Intermittent fan issue

Snails

New Member
I have an intermittent issue with my dashboard fans/heaters. Occasionally I will turn the dial to turn them on and absolutely nothing comes out. I'll try again 5 minutes later and they will blow as they should. I can see this being an issue with winter and cold mornings fast approaching. Any ideas or suggestions?

It sounds fairly simple like a loose connection somewhere, but I wouldn't know how to take the dash apart [smilie=icon_eek.gif] and auto-electrician should be able to sort it quite easily.

You could have a look at the connections in the fuse box as a first port of call, check if anything else is fed from that fuse and check if they are working all the time of just intermitently, as it's usually best to try the supply end first

They are known for the power transistor (or however you want to call that piece of power electronics which regulates the power delivery to the fan) to fry.

This ^^^

There is a good topic all about it "somewhere" with pics of the heater unit and lower dash all removed etc.

Thanks, I'll have a look through and see if I can find the topic. It is working about 4 out if 5 times I come to use it atm.

Though this is located in the front of the car an can be changed in less than 10 minutes or so...

Looking at the other threads on this topic, I think I'll order a new resistor pack from Ebay @ £36 rather than taking a soldering iron to the old one or getting one from Renault @ £100

It could also be the motor playing up , there is a thread on here showing how to clean connections/ motor brushes . Might save you £36

If its the resistor pack its located under the scuttle panel trims (the black plastic under the wiper arms). Ive brought these for £15 from breakers in the past. Usually though its just one or two of the lower speeds that gives up. Fast speed should work if the resistor pack is faulty as full speed doesn't use a resistor , thats how the slower speeds are created, (the greater the resistance the slower the fan).

and BTW the resistor pack is the same for all clios of the same age

I mean its not special to V6, so any similar age Clio that has the same number of fan speeds

Hmmm it may not be the resistor in that case, as it either doesn't work at all or it works completely as it should.

Can anybody suggest where I might find the heater resistor pack on a phase 1? I was trying to follow Ben's guide but immediately hit difficulties when I took the panel off....
