Insurance

Afternoon Guys,

My first post here so a bit of an introduction to myself. I'm currently 22, I'm a member on cliosport.net and drive a RB 182 (at least for a few more days) a guy is putting a deposit down this week hopefully! Hopefully making way for a nice little V6 sometime between now and christmas. The aim is to pay off credit cards etc with the money from the sale of my car, pay my insurance on the V6 and leave a little bit left for a depsoit which i will be adding to each month untill i find a suitable one. The theory of it all sounds good anyway!

Which leads me to here, Insurance. Now i'll start by saying i have no 'active' points on my liscence, however, i did have an SP30 from match 08 and a TS10 from march 09 (march seems to be a bad month for me) both of which are removed from liscence but i have to delcare them on insurance (i disagree with the system as i'm still being punnished for the points, but im sure others agree) Ialso have 5 years no claims, as of next month.

I'm getting quotes off confused.com of around £1700, which i think is a little steep (although i could be wrong) and im after advice on where to look for insurance. Is it better to ring around other places, such as specialists etc? as i have never done that before. I'm basing this on 3000 miles a year, and £1000 excess. I have a company van so the V6 would be more of a hobby and a weekend toy.

Hopfully someone would be able to point me in the right route to take, and then who knows, one day i may be posting in the media section.

Regards, Paul.

Paul,

I first insured the Vee at 22. Cost £1400ish iirc, 2nd yrs it was £971usg and not it's around the £500 mark. All with Admiral. The differentiator is location (Postcode) and regardless of your age/points/NCD the Postcode will have the greatest impact on your overall premium.

Good luck and welcome!

I'd try Adrian flux they always seem the cheapest to me , I am a bit older at 44 , but still worth a try ;)

Hi Paul,

Best of luck with the sale. I do like a nice RB 182!

I rang up sky, adrian flux and greenlight. between them three they were half what any comparison site would offer me. Admiral (& Elephant) were also not too bad.

Another point id mention is that in my experience a high excess made no difference. £200 or £1000 my policy was still the same. Nice to have the piece of mind that if something does happen your not going to be massively out of pocket.

So at least thats a good saving each year. My postcode is average, i'v looked on the postcode comparrison pages and im slap bang in the middle.
Famous question, was it worth paying all the money for? Or did you get bored after a year?

I'll be honest, it's gunna kill me seeing someone else drive it away!RB is by far the best colour for a 182!

I've never tried sky or greenlight before so maybe i will give them a call to get a rough idea of what there asking.

Hmm, i always thought that the bigger the excess then the cheaper the insurance, but your right, it would be a big piece of mind knowing that if something happened i wouldnt have to pay a £1000!

Welcome,

I'm 22 and I have a multicar policy which is less than what your getting quoted for. Although as mentioned, different postcode, clean licence etc etc

It can be done

Sam

I'm 22 and pay around £950 pa with Elephant.

You could try the more specialist co.s but I've never had much luck. You'll tire pretty quickly after spending half an hour on the phone only to be quoted several thousand....

Jeus how iws it that low, even if i take my points that i have to declare away, its still 1300.
Im guessing you have a good postcode? High excess too?

3 Years NCB & Clean History helps and postcode is okay. Also my occupation brought it down a bit.

Funny thing is I was paying £800 odd last year on a 320BHP Z3M Roadster...

You also need to consider that rates change a fair bit throughout the year so you can't really make like for like comparisons.

Yeah i understand no one is exaclty the same etc, no policy is the same. I was just curious of others.

However, iv just been playing around with confued.com, and if i insure it at my address its £1700, yet if i insure it at my mam's house its £1400. And thats 3 streets away! Goes to show how much postcodes effect it!
So you can guess my next question, is there any way i could be this legally possible? Tbf i'd be willing to make the sacrifice and leave the car at parents house most days of the week, The car and insurance would be regiestered at parents, but driving liscence at my house. Is there any wasy of this being legal?

When they ask the question "Where is the vehicle kept overnight?" - just say your parents address? Not sure if that'll have the same effect though.

Also, adding your parents to the policy may reduce the premium.

It doesn't give me an option to input an address, it's things like securied car park, residential car park etc.
I wouldn't do it if I knew it wasnt 100 % legal, maybe I'll ring the insurance company closer to the time.
Iv already got parents added. Tbf with the 6 points declared and my age I don't think 1400 is bad, next year it would only be 3, and year after none (touch wood). I guess I'll just have to wait an see closer to the time :)

Mine is registered and insured to my dads place where its also kept. Made a massive difference to my premium. Mr policeman who stopped me for a chat last year said it was fine from their perspective, which implies legally I've done nothing wrong :)

Reading that has made me a little happier. ha. Its a possibility that i may do the same.
So you have the car and insurance at your dads place, but your liscence at your place? Now when you say it's kept there, is that every night? or.....

Although i guess police vary from person to person and region to region. I bet on a bad day, some policemen would look into it further.

I keep my vee at my sisters and the insurance company was totally cool with that. It will always stay there so there is no problem from a legal standpoint. They said they do understand that occasionally it could be left overnight at my address but I wouldnt want to do that anyway cos it is safer at my sisters!!

My licence is at that address, the v5 has that address on it and it's kept there permanently other than if I bring it up to mine a night before a show or a run out. Policeman was much more interested in spotting undeclared mods when he pulled me.

I've always done it with my 'weekend cars'. Never had an issue.

23 £610 a year with elephant. 9000k a year. Edinburgh postcode (EH54) although I still need to change this to Aberdeen (AB11) which is going from a C to an A but I've put it off for 8 months :|. For me the biggest difference was putting other named drivers on the policy. I've got my mum, dad and girlfriend. 350 voluntary excess 250 mandatory as a young driver. Good luck with getting a better quote

Wow! That's pretty Awsome that!

1400, me 22, step dad 66, mother 52 and sister 27. I think postcode is a C or a D. (SR7) 3000 miles too.
However i have to declare 6 points which I no longer have. 1000 excess + the compulsory one.

I might play around with other named drivers, see what they can do.

Also, just as a note, sounds fecking stupid but try putting the fact you park it ON a road. And NOT on driveway / garage, brought mine down £80 lol I didn't believe it at first so I tried it an it worked.
