HOWMET TX of 1968 - Turbine Racer

Apparently this is the only turbine-powered car to have won a race: LINK

"The Howmet TX is powered by a helicopter turbine. Only two examples were built by the Bob McKee and Ray Heppenstall partnership, to compete in the 1968 endurance world championship season. One of the Howmet TX’s major technical innovations was the command system for managing the exhaust gases (waste-gates), designed to provide instantaneous response in both acceleration and braking phases"

The exterior looks like any other race car from that era, except for what look like rather over-sized exhausts.....

Check out the video of the car qualifying for the Spa Classic 2011.

Impressive, but must be really strange hearing that turbine whine all day long, and having no concept of changing gear, be it manual or automatic or modulating brakes!

They both look fantastic. Watching the video Dulan, at first it looks and sounds completly wrong but then after a few seconds it looks and sounds completly natural! I suppose its abit like driving a slow honda/briggs & stratton powered gokart with a centrifugal clutch. Main aim being to be as smooth as possible and use the correct line all the while. Such a shame we never see invitation like this these days.
