Can anyone help, my brake pads have completely gone, does anyone know how to get the brake calipers off,

Any help will be appreciated,

I have a ph1 vee

Cheers

cheers for that, so theres no need for the caliper to come off at all, i will give it a go as soon as the pads turn up, discs will prob be f**ked by then,

Thanx

Steve, dont worry about releasing the sliding bolt as it says in the manual, it is wrong! just release the pins and the calliper will swing up enough to remove the pads.

Whats the best way to get the pins out, i did try with a hammer but no luck, i assume its the silver pins at the bottom of the caliper,

cheers for the advice

Its the rears I was on about. the pins are obvious and are retained by a split pin which needs pulling out first. No need for hammers!
Saftey issue, make sure you know what you are doing, it is a vital piece of your car. If not certain I suggest expert help.

SteveVee,

I am not being funny but how did you get to the stage where the pads had worn right down before realising this ?

Servicing and regular inspections are essential with these cars really to keep on top of expensive repairs and maintain resale value.

Hopefully you haven't damaged your disks and as has been said replacement should be fairly easy to do :-)

Hopefully the pads should be with me tomorrow, ive changed pads on a vuaxhall i had some time ago, i will give it a go and see what happens.

I knew they where on there way out, but being in the raf a commuting 80miles a day in it, i find it hard to get time to do anything, and yes the disc is f**ked now, not good.

Thanx for the help!

Good golly 80 miles a day - that is some commute but bet its a good one in a Vee ;-)

But brakes are for everyones safety so don't take any unecessary risks.

@ Stevevee23,

Obviously, you don't know a thing about brake maintenance at all, nothing to be ashamed over at all, the problem start when you combine it with dumbassness, much more seen in the corsa-tuning scene, so one good piece of advice:

You can do it yourself, but first have somebody around who knows what he is doing, to assist you so you can learn.

If you get it wrong the first time doing it yourself, you might end up with no brakes at all, when you really need them.

Also when a hammer and screwdriver are the only tools you own, leave it to an expert.

The rear callipers need a special tool to retain, because you need to turn the pistons while pushing in. This is due to the handbrake system.

The locking pins are one way direction in and out!! and as said they have a splitting pin.

Also don't forget to clean the guiding bosses for the brake pads.

Also when you retain the calliper pistons, be sure that your brakefluidcontainer isn't up to max level, or elsewise you will spill it all over your front suspension. And brakefluid and carpaint don't go well together.

Some good advice there, I especially liked this bit though "the problem start when you combine it with dumbassness" that made me laugh :D

I do have knowledge of brake maintenance, i just thought it was a good idea to get some pointers before i undertook the task fully, as a vee is completely different compared to many other cars i have worked before, i know im not a mechanic as you may be, all i was after was some advice.

ps i do have more tools than a hammer and a screwdriver!!!

Thanks for everyones help

I am not being funny but if you arnt sure how to take the calipers off, I dont think you should do any work on the car your self. Brakes are not like changing an interiour lamp you do that wrong you get another go, get your brakes wrong and you could kill your self or worse some one else.

Please dont do it for safty sake.

You supply pads and pay an hour labour to a garage.
