Hello From Glasgow

Hi folks,

Martin here. My other half and I are considering a v6 and your advice would be appreciated. What sort of mileage is acceptable as a lot I've seen for sale have been advertised as 'low mileage' yet they have 50k on the clock. What is the lifespan of the v6 engine and what sort of money am I looking at?

I love the look of this but is it too rich for the age?

Cheers,

Martin

Each to their own mileage wise, to some fowk it wouldn't bother them having 50k on the clocks.

On the one hand that is a lot of money for a mk1 (probably double the average price they were selling for last year). On the other it only has 7k so is pretty much brand new and you'll struggle to find many with that kind of mileage these days.

Personally, I wouldn't pay that for a mk1 but advertised prices on vees do seem to be on the rise since the turn of the year. Whether or not they sell at that is a different story.

The engines are reasonably solid from what I'm led to believe. As per usual, regular servicing shouldn't be scrimped on

Welcome to the club :)

Mileage is discussed on here quite a bit. There are some Vee's with less than 1,000 miles on the clock whereas others have over 100,000! The rules are the same as most cars though, check the service history, if it's been well looked after then it should be fine.

My opinion is that there's not much point spending a lot of money on a car with low mileage if you're then going to use it regularly. If that's the case then you're better off getting something with moderate mileage (say 20-40k) and just enjoying it. If you think you'll only use it occasionally then a lower mileage example might be worth considering as a potential investment. When I say investment, the value may hold but don't forget to factor in at least £100 a month for general maintenance throughout your ownership.

With it being what looks like a BB Performance demo car, I'm feeling a bit nervous about it, but "some" of their work was acceptable to the Cliosport massive crew. Hopefully this one only had BB's exterior accessories thrown at it.

Welcome to v6clio.net Martin.

Thanks for the replies and feedback so far guys. Can I ask what £100 on maintenance would be for? If I thought I'd be paying £100 per month on anything other than fuel on any kind of regular basis then I'll probably look elsewhere.

My car line-up so far consists of:

2 civics - liked the sport
clio 197 - good car and I liked the revvy engine.
boxster - always wanted one but got nothing but abuse on the road after I resprayed it krypton green - 'nuf said lol
jeep - looked smart and I enjoyed driving it but missed the speed
and currently a corsa vxr - liked it at first but I'm getting a bit fed up and want something 'special'.

I actually almost went for a vee instead of the boxster at the time but wanted to get the boxster desire out of my system!

Ideally, I'd like to get something with under 15k miles within the next 6 -8 months!

Martin

For any bikers on here I also have a GSXR K5 which means I spend most of the time taking it easy when driving!

Is this a daily runner and do you have access to another car?

What do you think you'll use it for and will you do many miles?

8-10k a year I reckon (short commute and weekend trips) and have access to another car sir. Really want an immaculate example so I can maintain and improve it! Handing the VXR back within the next 10 months I reckon so perhaps a bit early to start talking about clios but I'm excited lol

£100 a month is what I put aside, this covers expensive servicing / maintenance items like:

New discs and pads = £750 (ish)
5 Year cambelt change = £1,200 (ish)
Tyres = £500 (ish)
Occasional front end respray £350 (ish)

It all adds up, it's also worth having some contingency in case of dreaded things like damage to bodywork (parts can cost an arm and a leg) or mechanical failure.

I thought that you were actively paying that on maintenance each month. Fair point if you're keeping funds aside if and when they're required. [smilie=thanks.gif]

On another note...and I know this has probably been asked numerous times before but...is it likely that we will ever see another v6 clio from Renault? I know it cost Renault far more to produce each vee than the retail price but is it a possibility? I was a member on the RUK for a number of years and the answer generally seemed to be...no?

Haha no they're not that bad mate :)

I doubt we'll see the likes of the Vee again :(

Not a chance of another V6 type of car. The Alpine-Caterham thing might be mid engined, but will be more mass produced than the Vee I think

Would I be making a huge mistake if I went down the MK1 route as per that link up above?

I personally wouldn't. It's a lot for a silver Ph1 imo, Ph2s are more like that price I'd say. You'd probably get my Ph2 Illiad on 31k for £15k - not that I'm selling but if I was it'd be about that price

15K minimum this time next year for a ph2 :approve:

Not in a position to buy just now and I wouldn't want to spend as much as that, particularly when the cambelt still needs done. That colour is very similar to the colour I had the porsche done in.
