Gearbox Problems

I recently sold my V6 ph2 (28,500 miles) to a chap from France - he collected it from Yorkshire and drove it back to south of Paris ( so quite some distance). On the way home he experienced a whining noise from the gearbox ( I've driven the car around 1,000 miles and never experienced any problem) which he says became louder the further he drove. He tells me that there are details on a French V6 website which mention problems with the PK6 ( ?) gearbox, and suggests a 50% contribution from me for a replacement gearbox.

I can't find any details of this on the websites I've looked at - does anyone have experience of gearbox (whining) problems ? is this a common fault on V6's ? Any comments most welcome.

With only 28.5k miles on the clock..? Seems very odd.

He would have got the car for an absolute song compared to the price of them in France..!

Yes it very bad luck for him, but your not a dealer, you offered no warentty, it was sold as seen, so i would tell him, very sorry old chap but go whistle.

Harsh but thats what the seller would say to me I am sure, even a dealer may say that, still works mate so it ant broke, can here the words coming out of the slighty sweaty dealers mouth as I write this.

But hey it's your call and money, but i know what i would say.

Steve

Stephen, there's a couple of mentions on our forum of whining gearboxs and diffs, but nothing to say it is a "common" problem as I read it.

We would like to know what plaque number or reg it was please, just so we can make a note it's gone outside UK.

Thank you

Yes it's 197 - wish I'd never sold it -and had he not sent me a deposit three weeks ago I wouldn't have done but I didn't want to go back on my word, I'm always very keen to do the right thing. Just want to buy another one asap if anyone's got one available ?

I must admit I'd certainly never experienced any problems with the car and was more than a little surprised to hear there'd been an issue with it !

Appreciate the comments made earlier - I'll wait and see what comes back from him re costings. I did detail on the receipt "sold as seen tried and tested" , which as I understand covers any eventuality with the car once it's taken away.

I certainly wouldnt be dipping into my pocket Stephen...

Good to hear you're returning to vee ownership! :approve:

Thanks - never been able to work out how to use paypal - my girlfriend just talked me through it ! - have been frustrated for ages not being able to access all areas - been on the site for some time and now feel my concionse is clear being a full member at last ! Great site, really enjoy it - now I just need another V !!!

Hope so - I'm keen to have a Ph 2 again - I had a ph 1 when they were first released some years ago. Really enjoyed my Black/Gold and kick myself for selling it. I'm interested to see what's available - I asked the guy selling the lunar grey car on pistonheads for some further information but not heard back from him !

Thats what happened to my old ph2 gear box, first it started grinding in and out of fifth, then it started to make a whiring sound whilst in 5th, this got louder as time went on and eventually was so loud, i didnt dare use the gear, and then it started in 6th, then 4th went aswell. All happened within the space of 2-3 hours.

It needed a refurb to get it fixed so i replaced it with my original ph1 gearbox and sold the ph2 gearbox.

the box had only done about 20k when it went.

Whining is usually the diff

Happened on my mk1 at 18k even though I didn't abuse the box

In my case i suspect it's cos the gearbox oil wasn't the recommended type from ELF / Renault so used the correct one for my Mk2 replacement box been ok so far

What is a reasonable price for a replacement or refurb correct pk6, anyone any idea? what do they make 2nd hand?

Specialist Breakers charge £750 for Phase 2 boxes but never have them in. Neither do any of the other breakers for that matter.

I've been ringing them every couple of weeks on the off chance, whilst I have been saving to get my box fixed.

Out of interest - as someone posted re lack of availability of "bodyparts" for a V6 - are all mechanical parts available or is there anything which is particularly difficult to get hold of ?

Specialists breakers claim to strip down and refurb their boxes plus want an exchange when i asked during my search - even though I live in hong kong so kind of difficult to pop my old box in the post!

Normal price is 500 - I got mine luckily from trw1 on here who was upgrading to a sadev

I bought a mk2 figuring if it went again Id rather refurb this box than a mk1 because the ratios are better suited for the engine which is defo noticeable plus think has a stronger diff casing

Thing to check is that it's a mk2 as another Hk member shipped one and found it was a mk1 a check on the casing number should identify I think

I'm going to pick up 2 brandnew PK6 Vee gearboxes, no refurb, straith from Dieppe means no dealer or middleperson involved. I need one for myself, so one avaible. Negative point is that i cant give any waranty but as said before, there are brandnew boxes at human price. I'll let one go for 1400, less then half the dealerprice (£2,681.00 +vat). I'm from Belgique but no worries, my next visit to Uk (London area) will be at march 12. I also can drop the box at my friends work (GAC logistics), no prob either.

Pics next week. Any interest, pm.

ps: will ask for bodywork/panels. What do you need ? I cant buy it without the knowledge that someone is after it, after all, i have to pay upfront (obviously)
