Gearbox Oil

Hi Guys,

I have been meaning to ask a question regarding gearbox oil.

Is there a different compartment for gearbox oil that needs to be maintained as regularly as engine oil? If so, how do you get to it and what oil should I use?

Thanks,
Phil.

Have a look at this bit of info.

I did this not long ago. I completly drained it off and measured out the amount needed. Mk 1- 2.2 litres.

I refilled through the reverse light connection on top of the gear box. Found it easier that way.

I got mine from a place called Partco, 75w80. Cost me £11 for 2 litres then got a 1 litre from Renault.

Ok great cheers. Just read those posts, I can't really see from them though how to check the gearbox oil level?

Cheers,
Phil.

You can't check the level of the gearbox oil. They is no dipstick.

The only way you can be sure that you have the right level is drain all out and put in the correct amount.

Oh ok. I assume it was done when the first service was done (which was at 11,000).

My car's done 17K. Do you think it's worth we changing it? Or is there something I should be on the lookout for regarding low gearbox oil?

Cheers,
Phil.

I dont know, but i wouldn't of thought Renault would of change the gearbox oil on the first service. (i might be wrong).

I think it would be the second service.

My mk1 has only done 12k 02. I did all my own service, did it then.

Up to you really.

yes wanting to do mine. My car is on 12900 miles (ish) and will carry out a gearbox oil change on the second service interval.

I've never looked at the gearbox (yet) but find it hard to belive there is no oil level plug. In fact i have never see any car without one [smilie=icon_confused.gif]

there is a special oil for the pk6 gearbox guy's.. elf trp. dont put anything else in your cars.

Do you work for Renault Clarkie??

How can a gear box have to have one type of oil in it??

Surely same grade is completely fine??

no mate....i am a ren specialist.

elf formulated this oil for this box..up to you if you want to risk it. i wouldn't.
all the 6 speads vehicles we service we always use TRP.

You should remember motor maufacturers and oil companies spend an awfull lot of money on R & D in order to get the correct oil etc.

I can give atual instances where not going along with the manufacturers recoomendation has cost millions in lost revenue.

1 milion barrels @ 100 dollars.

my dealer in hong kong put Shell in my car with the same specification - they also confirmed in writing that they had checked with their technical department at Renault that this was acceptable, so fingers crossed if anything goes wrong I can at least try to blame them!

So can anyone tell me what the difference is going to be between 2 same grade oils??

To me they are the same??

You must use a fully synthetic gear oil. The issue is that the oil used must stop any yellow metals being leeched out - must use GL4 spec oil and no higher or lower.

I use Redline MTL, this is 100% comparable with the standard Renualt stuff and can be bought from Opie oils. Opie have confirmed that it is suitable for the box as it is is 75/80 spec and complies and exceeds the MIL spec. I got the spec of the Elf stuff from my local Renault dealer from their spec book and discussed this with Opie prior to putting in my car.

Redline MTL is not cheap, but it is the best you can buy.

DO NOT USE NORMAL GEAR OIL EVEN IF IT IS FULLY SYNTHETIC and the higher GL5 spec.

Make sure you do not over fill _ I did once due to K-Tech telling me it took 3.75 litres and made a huge mess!. Only put in 2.40 Ltrs and measure it (the filler hole is not a level indicator!). This is for the Phase 2.
