Gearbox Help

I have a strange noise from gearbox when hot 2nd gear. Its like a crunching as if youv missed a gear but also sounds like a .....eh a steel
roller door being closed? Now please bear in mind this car has been parked up 4 about 4 years so the gearbox oil maybe low but probably lost its viscosity? What do you guys think? Its ok when cold for about 2 mins.please tell me its the old oil.

If it's been standing for a while, the cheapest and easyish option is to change the gearbox oil. Just loosen the fill plug before you drain the oil from the drain plug. It's situated in the left hand side gearbox mount.

When you change the oil also stick in a tube of Molyslip as this can help as well.

It's a friction reducer, and does exactly that.

I was advised by some other members on here to do this with any 21 gearbox oil change as the boxes are going to be rather old for the most part, and it makes a difference.

aye totally agree, but you can always squeeze a tube in afterwards if a straight oil change doesnt fix it..no point contaminating it unless you have to

On a sidenote I was advised by a gearbox rebuilder up here to stick ATF in rather than gear oil, he says he puts that in everything and it works better.

Yes I know.

Quite a big company up here and he rebuilds boxes for everything, Subarus, Evos, M3s, etc and always uses just ATF.

Still don't know wether to give it a try though but had a look around the web and other people recommend it as well strangely.

Stick with the RECOMMENDED oil viscosity from Renault, or higher quality fully synth of a similar viscosity.

Sinky- you answered your own question. Change the oil for the proper stuff, if it's still playing up it's time to pull the box out.

last time i sugested atf u guys nearly lyunched me but molly slip is like sawdust in a can it dont solve a problem just puts the problem to one side id only run atf in a good box
