Do we need car mags anymore?!

Been thinking of this one the last few days. Do we actually need car mags anymore? Forums such as ours offer pics, reviews, media, topics of interest, new products etc. All up to date, interactive and a lot cheaper than buying a monthly mag. Have the forums of cars (like piston heads etc) bridged the gap of car magazines?

I tend not to buy mags anymore but I do love the iPad version of EVO!
Will probably cancel my paper subscription as I've got 100 odd issues collecting dust in my loft.

I often think this, but then there's nothing better than reading a magazine when it has specific features as editions such as Top Gear or EVO do. Weekly mags like Autoexpress which tend to do car news are almost always a week out of date thanks to the internet. A bit like newspapers, why read yesterdays news when I have todays on my iPhone/iPad/Laptop etc

Yea I like the mag feel and things like taking them on hols etc. think they lend more to the reader than an iPad version - when done well of course.

I stopped subscribing to car magazines about 2 years after acquiring my Vee.

No disrespect to car journalists - but the majority dine out on a free lunch of automobile exotica - which we (the end user) indirectly cough up for...
hence many are perpetually raving about something newer, shinier, faster on the market.

Perhaps that's slightly cynical... ;)

Half the mags can't be bothered turning up to take pictures at events anymore. At the recent rtoc national day pfc decided not to show up but asked the club for pictures to put in the next issue.

I used to really enjoy my EVO subscription, but the cars featured are generally 10-500 times out of my price range - save for 1 or 2 pages a month - and i just got bored of it & havent renewed, especially since Nick Sold his v6! lol. Its one of the better written mags, but still highly focused on top end cars that 95% of people can't afford.

It is great looking back at old mags as they do document useful history. Reading 10 year old classifieds is interesting!!!

I now just buy the odd random mag when i go on holiday, or if theres an interesting feature on some rarer classic cars in there.

Course you need them. Dont tell me you sit on the bog reading your ipads nowadays
You cant beat the smell of a fresh magazine either and flicking thru the pages. I prefer the physical quality of a magazine rather than the ethereal/transient nature on an ipad.

Plus I like my folder full of Clio articles to look back on.
Want a big bookcase with all evo mags on it in a a spare room some day. :approve:

I used to read EVO but got bored of reading about the latest new Zonda (for example) that's just come out that they're going to make 5 of, each costing 2 million quid, and they've all been pre-ordered already my some Saudis who are going to stick them in a garage forever, never to be seen by the world!

EDIT: But I do still enjoy my big pile of EVO magazines that have even the smallest reference to the Vee in them!

What else are we going to read when we sit in dentist and hospital waiting rooms??? I'd screw if I had to sit for 4 hours with out a 2 year old topgear magazine!!! lol
