Did/does Bernie Ecclestone own a Vee?

Interesting discussion about whether or not to purchase a Vee here on the Lancer Register.

Nice to see that interest is definitely picking up, and several comments are being made to the effect that "it will not lose much in terms of value", which is encouraging. This may be a cue for those contemplating about the Acid Yellow currently on eBay.

However, what caught my eye was the following comment:

"Can't be that bad as I have seen bernie ecclestone out and about a few times in his blue one! That said it was no doubt a freebie from Renault so not sure if it means anything!

They are cool looking cars, if only some of the other manufacturers could have done similar models!"

Do we know whether Bernie E. actually owns/owned one, and that he actually drives (or drove) it on the road?

A lot of mentions about them being to slow which is quite irritating ,I don't know what they class as slow but mine sure isn't what I'd call slow .i think their comparing them all to 350bhp + evo's which is rather pointless :s

I usually don't worry about comments like that. People who make such comments usually dont "get it" as to what the Vee is all about. As we know its not all about going fast in a straight line, and nor is it about going round corners with the help of electronic wizardary and/or gizmos (ala active yaw control on the Mitusbishi Evo).

Therefore, I usually skip past such comments and look at those about the Vee's character, how mad the Vee is as a concept/package, how much fun it is to drive, rareity and, last but not least, its percieved value.

Good point Paul,

After reading over and over about the car on forums, magazines etc. as we all do I was almost resigned to the fact that it was a heavy underpowered car, this I thought wouldn't bother me, after all I have massive fun on B roads in a land rover defender, and they are SLOW. On the flip side I'm regularly in various new Porsches, Astons and the odd Ferrari so I have an understanding of the speed spectrum.

So I bought a phase 2 simply because I fell in love with it, I liked the way it was made, the concept, the looks and the rarity. My first drive of the clio was on the way home, and the best thing about the car was the surprise that it 'felt' like a pocket rocket, I was amazed. Slow it most definitely is not.

In a way I hope others looking at buying one get the same surprise after reading about the cars, what a pleasure to drive, perhaps it's the noise, or the fact I was in my honeymoon period, either way it felt great and what else matters. [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

I also skip over the "slow" comments, and home in on the sensible opinions from those more intelligent. For me the Vee is simply so different in looks and sound. It feels quite fast to me when doing 150mph.

I tend to shy away from posts mentioning values. I consider the money to be spent already, like buying a phone or gadget, the old one will be given away to family/friends to enjoy or binned.

I totally agree ,I get a buzz every time I drive mine and its got absolutely nothing to do with how fast it is ,its everything you mentioned above ,I just think some certain car owners think its about speed and nothing else. :salut:

Edited post to reflect what I intended, which is the Vee's perceived value.

Of course, at the same time I do not intend on losing out on the Vee, or any of the other motors, and certainly will not be binning any if I can help it, but if I have any still left well past retirement then gifting or donating them will be a possibility.

Indeed Paul. Cars are getting too fast these days, and are also packed full of electronics so that mere mortals can safely channel the massive power generated through 2 or 4 wheels, but I am not sure whether one really can connect with these as they do with machinery that do not have such gadgets.

I like the old school principle of motoring and am very happy with that, because you really have to drive the car as opposed to point it and bury the throttle and let the electronics sort everything out - of course one cannot fight the laws of physics, so the presence of electronics is not guaranteed to get you out of trouble if you over do it. Of course no doubt there are the new models/cars that are absolute marvels, but these are out of my price range right now.

Bernie did not buy one nor was he given one in my time at Renault so unless he bought one since 2007 to add to his collection it's unlikely.

Grrr...I was about to sign up and post. But really can't be bothered.

VERY SLOW - It does over 150! more than an EVO iirc? Mine could easily keep up with an FQ300!

And the guy who says they look chav...you drive an EVO! Clown!

Evo to Vee is no comparison really. Point-to-point on road and track the Vee would get slaughtered.

However, as I've found out, speed and acceleration is only one component of the overall package a car can provide. Obsessing about one particular aspect is a bit pointless - more so when comparing two cars as disimilar as a vee and an evo.

It's like judging your missus purely on her ability to run fast. Pointless. Only so far you can run in a kichen anyway.

No our cars aren't slow but to be fair none of them were directly lining an evo up next to a vee. By the looks of it, one of the guys owns a GTr so clearly his perception of slow might be higher than most. But then saying that, being around 8 second drag cars a lot of the time, I suppose i could say the same about a vee, evo or GTr.........but I don't. Everything is relative.
