Dash lights and exhausts.

it seems that most of the aftermarket exhausts put the dash lights on, is this true?
if so why, is it because the lambdas are placed in the wrong position or what? it can only be because the second lambda after the cat is misreading as anything after here including the second cat does not matter. i am thinking of a sports system with cats but do not want the dash light on every farts end. i also want to use the lambdas not fool them with resistors etc.
any info and recomendations of systems would help,
however i am not interested in how loud your new backbox is unless
its on a fully tubular manifolded system.( proper exhaust)

Mine does qualify with the dash light permanently on. It is also very loud (at the moment)

very loud at the momeent james.... you having a change...
May be having it silenced a bit. I was chatting to Scott and he feels it's a beautiful system, but perhaps a tad too loud for my needs. It may be sorted much later on in the year (near special mot time) ;)

Will these guys do a full system, with sports cats, if so where are they and have you had any direct experience with them? i don't want to get into a situation where someone has the car for a year with cash up front but no work getting done, you know the score.

The dash light comes on with a decat or sports cats. The light is for the performance of the cats. Sports cats do the mimimum to pass the MOT, ie less than the std setup which goes beyond the MOT requirements. The light is for emissions from each bank of the zorst. Error code 420 and 430 IIRC. It can be turned off with a ODB2 gizmo, but is not worth the hassle TBH as it comes back on after a while.

My Janspeed system has a tubular manifold and no cats and it lights the dash light. As does the Janspeed system with the sports cats. To have a full system and NOT turn on the light you'd have to have full size cats of the same quality and capability as the std renault items (otherwise the ECU will spot the change and light the light). Cats like that would be restrictive unless they were large to get the required flow. They would also mean a bespoke exhaust and probably be expensive.

IMO you need to take it on the chin if you want a higher flow zorst for more power that the light will come on.

Other solution is obviously full new management (ECU), but also prohibitively expensive.

Thanks peter, i do agree with what you are getting at, i feel if the cats are big enough it can work. dont want the light on, at all and have a snapon solus so its not a problem to switch off. i also dont want to go down the ecu route as i feel the std system is more than capable if you keep it closed loop for the majority of the time, obviously not for acceleration and full power but that can be dealt with on the std system anyway as its more than up to the job.
just HATE THOSE MANIFOLDS as they are crap! just glorified boat anchors.
my only concern in modifying to bigger cats is the running temp, if they are too big they dont get hot enough and yes you guessed, light on!
there has to be an answer and like a dog with a bone, i will get there, so, is there much room after the 3 branch to fit a decent quality cat? also cost within reason is ok, i have found that a lot of supposed aftermarket cats light the dash anyway. poor quality i suppose. thanks again and any more info is really appreciated.

Agreed on the awful cast iron manifolds. Yuk. They look horribly restrictive. I have my old ones in my garage if anyone wants a few pics. Seriously bad. The Janspeed has proper tubular manifolds that look like they should flow MUCH MUCH better. Seem to provide more mid range grunt too.

You right about the size and temp issue. BUT on a long run bigger cats would i'd imagine still get upto temp. There is room for a larger cat in the pipework IIRC. I may be able to dig out some pics of my system prior to fitting to try to help, but on the car not so sure on clearances to other components.

Personally knowing no off the shelf options for MOT pass and emission light off i went for more power and MPG with the decat (and ignore the light). IMO if the dash light is to come on you may as well go decat. MOT is an issue but can be resolved.

If you can get this sorted your onto a winner IMO. A good quality s/steel full system with better manifolds, sports cats that don't light the emission light, a nice noise and attractive tailpies is ideal. But AFAIK its currently un-available.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info, pics would be helpful but im in no hurry, theres got to be a solution, just got to find it, i do still believe the quality of the cat has a lot to do with it. i see that some of the replacement cats are only around 50 - 60 quid each! you will get £40 for an original scrap, that has got to say something.
the nicest system i have seen so far is the one from protoxide, but they wont even talk to me, thats the italians for you. 1900 euros is a lot to cut up though! any more info welcome.

thanks tim, very sensible and helpful answer, if you find the reciept or know where i can get these let me know, ray has my number, spike.
oh, and nice pics james, whose dyno is that in the pics?

Not too sure Spike, but as it's Tims Vee I expect it was somewhere very proper like Owen Developments that sort of higher spec place.
