Creaking steering..?

Chopper

Member
Am a little concerned, recently i've noticed that my steering is creaking rather loudly...It is most noticeable when parking up or perfomring a slow 3 point turn for example. Also seems to be more pronuonced when turning the wheel to the right. It has done this for a while but never been that bad, but seems to have suddenly got a lot worse recently.

Any ideas what this might be, had the MOT in July and all was fine and had the suspension mounts changed to the K-Tec solid ones back in May

thanks

thanks for the link James and i'll also check power steering fluid levels etc this weekend. I think i've always slightly noticed it but has becmoe more pronounced more recently. Does seem to be a weird 'faault' though that a few seem to have

Sounds like suspension top mounts. Mine creaked really bad on 3 point turns and on right lock. Changed the rubber top mounts and it cured it.

Speaking of top mounts, I'm about to overhaul the front end to get it nice and tight again. Can you get top mounts from ECP or GSF etc? I recall they are the same as a standard Clio Mk2. If that's the case then ECP have SKF units for something like £35 for the pair including the bearing. Anyone fitted them? Or as ususal in the case of Euro car parts - TRIED to fit them?

Scrabble - it could also be the front ball-joints, though that looks like it's going to cost you £470 plus fitting -as I've asked on Here and it seems it's a Stealer only part. The ironic thing is that the whole front arm is something like £90 including the wrong LBJ the correct one is nearly 3 times the price of the whole lower arm - ONLY RENAULT!!!

As a last resort, it could be the anti-roll bar drop links, though these are normally clunky when going over bumps, so I'd go for top mounts or lower ball-joints.

It seems a fairly common problem really, my car did this about a year ago, I had a look around couldn't see any leaks or anything untoward :s.I sprayed the bottom half of the spring and strut liberally with waxoil while I had the wheel off and low and behold the creaking stopped straight away [smilie=icon_cheers.gif]

The supspension top mount is just a massive rubber doughnut that gets a bit soft over time and starts to creak when the top of the spring and the weight of the car rub on it when doing 3 point turns and right/left turns etc...

I bought mine from Reno including the lower wishbone arms and ball joints. I think the whole lot inc labour came to about £500?

You could also fit solid top mounts from K-Tec.
