This might be worth a sticky - up to you.

26th January 2007

I have just spoken at length with Renault UK regarding V6 coil failures.

They accept that a ‘bad batch’ of coils was produced by Bosch and fitted to the V6 range.

They acknowledge that these ‘may’ be more prone to failure.

They are very willing to replace coils that have failed on a case by case basis free of charge during the warranty period. Once outside of the warranty period, they will look ‘favourably’ upon replacing broken coils at no cost.

However and this is the important point, they have not received enough reports of V6 coil failures to warrant a recall - in fact they claimed that reports of coil fails are incrediably rare. Bearing in mind the number of reported failures on this forum, I must conclude that either Renault UK are not being truthful about the recorded failure rates or we as owners are not reporting failures.

IF A COIL BREAKS, regardless of whether it is within its warranty or not, you MUST report it to Renault UK. If we report sufficient failures, then I have been reliably informed that France Technical will authorise some form of recall and replace all coils from the ‘bad batch’ free of charge.

How many reports of failures are actually required to force a recall is unknown.

Great news! Does that go for all Clios including Mark 1's? Take it they will only replace once they have gone and not before if you took your car in?

Yes they will only replace broken coils.

It doesn't matter whether the V6 is mk 1 or 2.

Perhaps we should use this thread to collect a long list of coils replaced in the past. A bit hard since with this being a public forum people quite understandably might want to keep things reasonably anonymous so howsabout ...

<Mk1/2> #<car number> - <approx mileage> - <number of coils done at that time>

So eg.

Mk2 #123 - 15k - 1 coil

Mk2 #109 - 17k - 1 coil
Mk2 #109 - 22k - 1 coil

The first one was replaced by renault the second one I replaced from a replacement that TRW sent me in the post.

Go back and look what I have said, more or less this is what was said I think two years ago.

If you don't ask you don't get.

As simple as that.

Surprised they mentione dthe manufacturer.

Mk2 #109 - 17k - 1 coil
Mk2 #109 - 22k - 1 coil
Mk2 #049 - 37k - 1 coil
Mk1 #156 - 20k - 1 coil
Mk2 #065 - 20k - 1 coil
Mk2 #065 - 33k - 1 coil

22/09/06 - 2 x coils (one on the rear of the engine / 1 on the front) needed replacing on mine - havnt had any more go since

I changed them myself in the end as the local renault said they couldnt have my car in for another 2 weeks to fix the problem  Only took me 30 mins to do it - god knows why renault said i had to wait 2 weeks

i have had two coils fail on my mk1. both within a few 100 miles of each other at 30k

One problem though....it seems most have had a coil problem from 2002 registered MK1s right up to 2005 registered MK2s.

They can't all come under the bad batch theory.....its impossible to tell where the bad ones went unless Renault had a way of recording them...

Fighting a lossing battle IMO.

I forked out £200 and that was doscounted to have coil no 4 replaced (manifiold off)

If I thought for a second that Renault would have covered that cost then I would have kicked up, but I really very much doubt it.

Mk1 #156 - 20k - 1 coil
Mk2 #065 - 20k - 1 coil
Mk2 #065 - 33k - 1 coil
Mk1 Lutecia - 11k - 1 coil

Interesting they mention Bosch as the manufacturer when the replacements, I have one of them in front of me now, are made by SAGEM. Does this mean the SAGEM items are more reliable? Has anyone had a repeat failure of a replace SAGEM coil?

IIRC the faulty and replacent coil I fitted were both visualy identical both made by the same company, same markings etc.

Same as peter, my failures are actually SAGEM ones aswell, the only thing different on the replacement is a dab of paint
