Coil Gone?

Driving along tonight when all of a sudden the engine warning light came on and the car was running really lumpy. From the outside the noise from the exhaust can best be described as a subaru boxer bumpy kind of idle.

I limped the car to Renault but there won't be anyone around to look at it until Monday (i've left the vee there till then:( ). Sounds like a coil problem to me. Any ideas? Im worried this might be an expensive one!

To be honest i don't know. I didn't want to try and push it as I was pretty sure i wasn't doing it any good driving it as it was.

It was definately under powered and the noise of the engine was completely different, kind of flat four sound as i mentioned before.

would say the same as one of mine went last saturday. Had to take it on the monday to renault and it was coil no4........sounds the same as felt really lardy and no power. Was fine when dring over 3k revs
 
Ok, so the burning question if it is a coil, how much is the stealer going to charge me to get it fixed?

I think the part is about 35 notes.

Labour - maybe depends on which it is. Some you can easily get at and unplug / replace, others need a few bits removing first - that takes time and hence money.

Do it yourself and save a few quid.
 
Fingers crossed its a coil thats easy to get to then!

Looks like I could be looking ballpark £200. :?

Hopefully they've got the parts and i can get her back on Monday :D

Mine was no4 and they charged me £199 to do it!
 
Coil number 3 has gone.

Cheereo £198 :(

On the plus side I get my baby back today :D

iang - if 1 - 3 0r 3 ever go again just buy a coil and do it ya self.

i am so bad at mechanics but even i did it with the help of this forum and a 8mm socket - thats all you need

saved me over £150 by just buying the part
 
Sh*t I thought number 3 was a difficult one? Plenum (wrong spelling?) off etc?

Can you get to it without taking the covers off? If you can theres no way im paying for £160 worth of labour!

It gets worse. I went to pick the car up. Paid my £196. Turned the key and bang, warning light on. Tractor idling again.

I marched back in and said they haven't fixed it so off it went to get check. Turns out coil number 6 went this time. So its now been fixed at a cost of £90. They gave me a deal on the labour! So £290 and i should fingers crossed be back running on all 6.

The question is though, did number 6 actually go or did they just not fix it properly in the first place? How can I check?

Once 1 goes, the others often follow in quick sucession. Best to get them all done while you're at it as they have all the plenum etc off so the extra labour is minimal, then you're ok for another 20-30k miles.

If you want a fit & forget solution, then have the trophy coils upgrade instead.
 
No 4 on mine has just gone today. Its in Renault though they don't know whether the plug has gone as well and they don't have one in stock - 2 days to get it.

Can I chnage the copil and leave the plug to get the car back today?

On the other hand don't want them to fit the coil build it all back again and then find its still; not working.

In those who have had coils changed is it wise to change the plug as well?
 
But if I only change the coil will the car be ok? Can I get away with leaving the plug until another more suitable date? They haven't one in stock so i can't leave it there for 3 days while they order one in...!
 
Just got them to order a plug anyway to be on the safe side...

£165 all in for changing coil number 4 (awkward one) and the plug...

Thats with the Renault Club 4 discount on parts and labour...
