cheapest ways to get 300hp for mk1 vee

Guys, I have suggested by using supercharge to get the extra power, and so much good opinions received. Thanks!
So, could you guys give me more details for what is the best way to boost up the power?
I know some of opinions suggested that go for evo or some japs cars, but vee is vee, I like this good looking car and I need to modify it to have better controlling. So balance, lowering center of gravity and weight shift and lowering will such be concerned.

Im surprised no one has done this to a vee yet, big space in there to play with. I'd love to see a tuned 350z engine in one!

Do you want to tune the original engine or change the engine out?

If you change the engine out the 'easiest' thing to do would be to put an evo engine and front axle in. Heat and cooling will still be an issue. As well as handling when the boost comes in unless mapped to allow some lag. Accelerating through a fast bend and then suddenly you come on boost...

If you decide to keep the original engine then you'll need inlet plenum, cylinder head and fully decatted exhaust pipework. Will also need to change the gearbox as they're a ticking timebomb in a standard car let alone one running more power.

There's LOADS of discussions on here about it though. I'd spend lots of time searching and re-reading old posts for the pros and cons.

Personally I wouldn't concentrate on peak power I'd look at torque and I'd also look at bhp per ton rather than outright bhp. The vee is a fat bastard and there are some easy weight saving wins to be had e.g have you picked up a standard seat [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Oh and tuning vees won't really ever be 'cheap' unfortunately.

It would be nice to see someone do a proper job on weight saving. All the panels in superlight weight CF etc.. Ditch the steel doors/bootlid, heavy subframes etc. but that is another discussion. :)

Cheap to 300 Hp :-) is not possible in my opinion.

Advise: ditch as much weight in the right position as you can.

Nitrous will always be the cheapest way to gain shit loads of power. You'll need a progressive controler and uprated clutch though. However its cheating and runs out!

Tunning a v6 to around the 300hp mark would be cheaper than adding an evo engine I reckon. You'll be looking at a couple of thousand for a good one, then new driveshafts, new wiring and ecu, engine and gearbox mounts, a charge cooler system, heat management. . . . .still a fair bit. Put it this way, I can put a honda type R motor in the front of a mini using completly off the shelf parts for about £5-6k. That's with no development work or testing. Literally turn key. I'm pretty sure that if you spent £6k on the top end of a v6 you would have a bit of a monster.

You need to become a paid-up member to have access to the 'special project' section. Access to the old V6 Trophy race media will also demonstrate the SWB concerns.
: )

Why 350z Iain? Thats a big heavy N/A lump too?!

Still a v6 ie noise, 300 odd bhp standard and easily tuned?

First one that jumped into my head because of the v6 really.

But going down the Evo route Id go the full hog and make it 4wd too.

4wd transverse set ups wouldn't work as the propshafts all point the wrong way.

Alfa V6 would be a good swap. There are companies abroad that get 400+bhp in n/a form and they are a similar size. One lump that I reckon would be great is the latest megane RS lump. Would still cost though.

It's been done already... there's a video of it at Castle Combe iirc.

Gotta Link? love to see that [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

I also heard somewhere the R35 GTR engine would fit.although im sure wouldnt be a cheap project, cooling im sure would be almost impossible

There is someone on here that's been building a ph1 for a while (TWR1?). Think the aim is to get it to 1050kg. Now that would make the whole thing a bit more pokey!!

Problem with tuning is you end up moving the weak spot around. In order to get a nice increase of reliable power you'll probably need to think of many more things than just engine; gearbox, clutch, cooling, suspension, brakes etc etc. Once you add all these things in a nice 'cheap' project suddenly becomes a moneypit.

...And let's be honest as a thing to look at the Alfa v6 beats a Vee engine hands down!!

Autodelta do a 370bhp upgrade for the Alfa v6. Probelm is getting it to talk to a transverse gearbox I guess.

All the latest GTA's were fwd so its a doddle. Infact the majority were fwd ioff the top of my head. Autodelta was the company I was thinking of.
