Cheap Illiad PH2 on PH

I still don't see why either of these are "fishy".

They might not be up at £18k but at least they're realistically priced relative to what's being paid for them at the mo.

Doesn't mention service history or cambelt. Wouldn't go near these! If I was buying one, I'd pay a bit extra for one that's been properly cared for.

As promised in regards to the Ph2 on eBay

I had a friend go and view this for me as it was over 6hrs away, I have just coped exacley what he typed to me, hopefully useful for someone :)

I turned up and luckily the guy wasn't there already but the car was. It gave me a good chance to take a good look around it without anyone watching over me

First thing you notice is the calipers, the paint has peeled off of them and look a bit messy (not the end of the world and can be repainted but I am going to list everything I saw).

The is a 1.5" scratch on the n/s/r panel near the boot which has been touched up with a pen, there is also another scratch roughly the same size closer to the passenger door which hasn't been touched up.

There is a scratch on the n/s/r window (1" ish) which is probably the mark you saw on the engine cover, it is on the window itself.

N/S sill has a light scratch on it and there is one near the keyhole on the passenger door.

N/S/F wing has been scraped against a car/wall/object and has been badly touched up, it also looks pebble dashed/touched up.

N/S/F fog pod (if that is what it is called) has been badly sprayed.

There is a scratch on the drivers door, about an inch long.

O/S sill looked like it had a small circular scratch just smaller than a penny. There were marks where people had touched the paint with a shoe (could probably be corrected).

I didn't have my tyre tread gauge with me but the rears definitely need doing and the fronts aren't far behind.

The car only has 1 stamp at 27k miles. It hasn't had a cambelt/water pump/service recently. The guy said if you wanted it doing he could get it done for £300. I queried the price as to me that is extremely cheap (too cheap) and he guaranteed that it would be done by his dads garage that deals with mainly Lotus cars. He didn't sound too sure when I asked if they had done one before.

The car just had an MOT - he said one of the headlights needed adjusting and that was it.

It is taxed until the end of June.

The interior - seats moved how they should, no idea what rear speakers are put into the Vee but it had Focal's in it. There is an aftermarket stereo and no cd changer (well, not under the passenger seat anyway). All covers seem to be there, the roof was slightly marked near the back of the car.

The car was number 178 and is a UK spec.

The centre console looks like it has been taken off as there are some screws missing passenger side and under the drivers dash it seems to be poking out/not clicked on properly.

One thing that surprised me (no idea if they all do this) but the tailgate doesn't open up that high! I nearly walked head first into it (I am guessing they aren't like 172's in that respect :P)

Any questions feel free to ask.

The guy was telling me how he thinks it is fairly priced and because it is rare it demands a premium. He did say to me though that I should give him an offer and he would think about it.

I was rather dissapointed to find this out as it did look mint, I followed this up with a pleasent email to the guy selling it to ask for more pictures of said marks/scracthes above... no reply lol

Makes me kinda happy that these cheaper cars are in this kind of condition it proves the "you pays your money....." saying ;)

Then on the other hand I don't want to see a Vee treated with a lack of respect like that one

It's a shame that some vee's are treated this way but at least we can breathe happy knowing that our V's are worth much more! [smilie=icon_cheers.gif]

You lads are probably going to think I'm a dickhead but I am now the owner of this car. Yes I know it's not been treated properly in it's previous ownership but I intend to change all that. Ideally I'd of bought one like sammyturbo is selling but I just cannot afford it. And I like the idea of restoring a classic like this one to it's former glory.

BTW - I did beat the dealer down on price. I think what I paid was fair.

I still love it to death tho... My Vee is not perfect. But it's still my Vee!

A bit of TLC is what some Vees need to make them nice ones again, Andy seems quite earger to take on that roll.
Mine could do with a better owner than I am. ;)

There are lots of Vees at different conditions and prices and these suit the market in terms of cars being affordable and re-storeable ... If every car was genuinely mint/low mileage blah blah blah then the market and owner base wouldn't be as dynamic.

The only issue with cars, and it maybe relates to some of the comments in this and other threads - aswell as for sale ads, is that descriptions can be dishonest or misleading in an attempt to catch buyers out but I am sure we all take care when parting with our money and make considered purchases based on our requirements and budgets.

As far as your point Andy, I am sure no-one thinks you are a d******d - you own a car you have wanted for years and you can do what you want to restore it to its former glory ... and I am sure you will thouroughly enjoy doing so :approve:

Martin

Cheers Martin... Your a true gent! I just found this tread and then read BREMBO's e-mail and my heart sunk. But I'm still proud of my Vee. At least it's not in the hands of someone who doesn't care about it anymore.

It's all about feeling you get value for money Andy with whatever you buy - in this case if you had paid 'top dollar' for the car you might feel a bit dissappointed but as it is you seem to have got a car which needs some TLC and at a price which reflects that and is within your budget ...

Not everyone can magic up 15k plus for the 'top' cars - yes some 'top' cars come up for less but in reality there is a big spread of cars at different prices - the cheapest isn't likely to be the best and niether is the most expensive for that matter. What is a 'top' car anyway ? it means different things to different people ...

To most people the ownership experience is the 'magic' with the Vee (and many other specialist cars) and not primarily how tidy it is or it's resale value - these things can often be imroved anyway in the hands of the right owner.

Martin

You're certainly right about the 'magic' some cars can give you. A few of my mates are car nuts and one has a brand new Focus RS, his brothers owns a Escort Cosworth, another has a Renault Megane R26 and one has a Alfa Romeo 159. For me, the v6 Clio has been the 'magic' one and, as you know, I've had to scrimp and save to get one. I wish I could of afforded one of the better examples. But my Vee, for all it's negatives, still gives me the joy and pride I was hoping for.

Just out of curiousity, what would you boys say is the going price for a Vee in top condition with FSH?
