Car won't start, just turns over

Hi all,

So I'm round my old dears and park on her drive. She needs to move my car off the drive to get her car out. She gets in, reverses it and stalls it. Starts up again and she parks it on the drive.

She does her shopping, comes back and needs to move the cars over. So again, she gets in, starts the car up and instantly stalls it. She's not sure whether the car stalled by itself or she had the clutch up too high (she's only small you see).

Anyway, now it won't start at all. It just turns over and over (turns over fast, not sloooowly). Sometimes it sounds like it's about to fire and start up but falls over again. It doesn't sound like a dead battery, lights etc are all fine too.

After some reading I've read it could be the fuel pump, on turning the key the second time I do hear a noise from the back (presumably the fuel pump) and have checked some fuses and relays and they seem fine. I say "some" as I can't accurately identify any as the manual only has the fuses internally. I've read the yellow relay in the front fuse box under the bonnet is the fuse, we've taken that out and could still hear the fuel pump activate (if that's what it is).

I'm really bad with cars unfortunately as you can probably tell. So we've tried turning it over, I can smell fuel but no success. I don't want to keep doing it in case something else screws, we've run tests on OBD II code readers and no faults are found.

Any help please? What to check? Fuses? Any help is appreciated, thank you! :) (We've just had it connected to a battery charger/jump leads, and no good). We haven't tried disconnecting the battery yet.

You could try the set of fuses bend the tool kit - pull the carpet back. Take the fuses out and back it and that may work.

Hi Liquid, what fuses? All?

If it's flooded, do I just keep turning it over? (Been doing that for some time, but don't want to cause any damage).

Cheers!

Pull the carpet back behind where the tool kit and you will see some fuses (like relays). Take them out and pop them back and try it then.

Okay, I will have to try this tomorrow and update. Thanks.

Ok hope it works. :approve:

Let's hope. Cheap if that's the case :D Cheers.

She has just told me she tried pumping the accelerator when it stalled etc, and with the strong smell of fuel, hopefully it's just flooded and the ole' girl will be right as rain tomorrow.

Possibly then. :approve:

Hmmm, no luck unfortunately. Turns over, sounds like it wants to start but won't. There was a ringing coming from the back for about 10 seconds when I got in the car.

When trying a puff of crap came out of the exhaust.

I will try the relays in the boot.

If it's flooded it might be a spark-plug out job before trying a restart ????

I'm aware this isn't the easiest job on a V6..............

I used to have an issue with my Spyder every now and then. Had to remove the plugs and clean/dry before throwing them back in, it would then fire first time.

However you "may" have an electrical ignition problem ????

Good Luck

Hi,

I tried removing and putting back the relays / fuses in the boot but no luck. :(

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that's something my bro would have to do for me tonight when he gets back as I haven't got a clue unfortunately.

It's really frustrating, it's so close to starting but just won't!

Sounds like a fuel pump issue...
have you tried a search of the forum?

I certainly have, I only post after a good search. I couldn't quite find the same problems though, or if I did it was a different problem to what I am seeing at the moment.

Can I just clarify, I've heard so many contradictions.

Leaving the car over night has sorted the issue, but I've heard so many people say to unflood an engine, hold your throttle to the floor and turn it over and over and it should start.

On the other hand, I've heard this will only make the problem worse.

Could someone please clarify?! :)

this used to be the way reno told me on my old 172, it always worked

I've a mk2 v6 and there was 3 fuses that was in the fuse box on the pass side of the dash in the little flap, these 3 fuses when replaced sorted a starting issue out, also try the red switch under the bonnet, its a safety cut off switch, but these are known to pop up, inside, try pushing that

Yeah, be sure to check the big ol' Red button, Many years ago i once knocked the button on mine without realising when putting a bag under the bonnet & had to suffer the embarrassment of calling out the breakdown company & watch the mechanic check that first only to find out that's what it was!....needless to say stupid doesn't describe how I felt.
