Cambelt Service - A brief summary

idefix

Member
As i am in the progress of getting all parts together, i thought it might be helpful for other people to have a list of things they should or could get.
Of course not all the parts are needed...but most of them are just reasonable to do while the engine is out.

Please feel free to correct me if i forgot anything elementary...There might be some small bits missing.

These are all Phase 2 partnumbers!

Very useful info Frank :approve:

As regards the Starter Motor, how are the magnets mounted within the motor casing in the two you have listed above? As I understand it the OEM unit has magnets that are epoxy bonded, which come adrift with time and/or under high engine bay temps since the unit is in close proximity to the exhaust. As such, the recommendation is to use an improved version where the magnets are bolted to the casing.

EDIT: Just seen that a Valeo (D6RA107) unit had failed on a Vee that had done £16K miles: LINK

Found that there are quite a few substitutes: LINK

Question is which ones have the screwed/bolted magnets?

Excellent thread you've found there :approve:

The D6RA107 from Valeo is the exact same part as the OEM Renault starter...just for less money.
If there is a better cost effective alternative (Bosch?, Lucas?) i will add them to the post :)

Regarding valeo-quality....the thread and the information in it seem to be right.
My starter (60000km) is also on its way out...so they fail or will fail soon or later IMO
Don't know which one has the screwed magnets...judging by the price it should be the bosch part...

BTW
I'm still on the hunt for the diff seal partnumbers....

:approve: excellent info and summary, Frank.

This post should really be made into a Sticky or link into the Knowledge Base.

Just wondering are those Renault tools hard to get?

You can get the gearbox dipstick 0000167500 from your Renaultdealer...iirc i paid around 10€/8Gbp for it.

Haven't tried to get the 0000143000 Locking pins from them, but it shouldn't be a problem.
I read somewhere that you'll get a pack of 4 pins when ordering from Renault.
But you'll need 5 of them on the vee....

I had some trouble getting the LUK Phase 1 Clutch.
It's nowhere in stock and LUK removed it from their product range.

So what i did was to get the SACHS 3000951163 part as its at least in stock and costs almost the same.
Funnily what i got in the end was LUK parts with Sachs labels inside a Sachs box
It doesn't matter what you buy...LUK, Sachs or Valeo...its likely you will get the same parts just in a different box.

Some recommendations/additions for your consideration 8)

If the power steering pumps makes a whining noise when revving up and steering out more than one turn it is wise to replace this also when the engine is out.

Power steering pump
96 44 538 980

Alternator is also recommended due to bearing wear [every 50.000 miles?] and the oily position beneath the power steering pump.

Alternator part number: 96 37 185 880

Next item is the locking ring and washer which holds the left drive shaft in the gearbox. In my opinion these rings are under severe stress when the car is launched causing failure of these parts in the end. Therefore recommended to be replaced regularly preventing fatigue and saving your diff. Cost less than 10 pounds.

Washer [Part 9+10] 77 00 104 965 Circlip 77 00 104 966

Other point of interest is the ball bearing on the right driveshaft. Check if there is still grease inside and the radial/axial play by hand. Bearings are not sold separately through Renault but easily bought at your local SKF ball bearing supplier.

On the car it is a 6007LU which translates from an automotive code to a industrial code in 6007 2RS

Another obvious thing to mention whenever the covers are off completely is to top up the power steering res, seems obvious but its a shit when you forget! trust me!
