Bubbling engine covers delayed last new car deliveries

I have been asked about why the plaque numbers on the last few months of production do not sometimes seem to match the order of registration and was it cars being used for display or simply a lack of customers that meant that there were still cars registered in 2006 when production ended in July 2005?
Actually the factory had a problem which caused a huge blockage of deliveries in the last few months of production.
At some point in Spring 2005 in the last 6 months of production they had to change the supplier of the adhesive glue that was used to wrap the covering around the outer engine cover. Simple you would think but what quickly became apparent was that once the cars were parked outside in the sun and heat the cover, started to bubble until it looked like the surface of the moon!
Thankfully.... it happened relatively quickly before any cars were delivered to customers I believe.
So now the factory had complete cars but with no engine covers so while a new type of adhesive was being tested they had to keep building them then store them in a warehouse on site at Dieppe.
The problem though was compounded by the fact that as production was nearing the end, component suppliers had been given final order estimates so having spoiled quite a few engine covers they had to wait months while the supplier made more.
So the decision was made to priortise any cars that were private customers as opposed to cars being used by Renault.
So for example I had ordered my Vee company car early in 2005 only for it to suffer from "moon crater cover". When i went to visit Dieppe in June 2005 I was taken to see my lovely Liquid Yellow V6 but told they had no idea when it would be deliverd as it had no engine cover. You can imagine my disappointment!
So any RUK car whether it was a display car or company car that did have a good cover had it removed to put into a customer's car which may explain why some cars were registered in 2006 like the 56 plate #314 LY (even though it was used as a display vehicle it was probably missing an engine cover towards the end! ) that was not sent to a dealer until May 2006.
Luckily for me I was found another car in September 05 which had been used for display over the summer (#321). :race:
My original order that I had seen at the factory in June 2005 was actually UK number #305 which then became Jeremy T second company car (HY06 YHD) but not until March 2006, 10 months later. Likewise Sally's Moonlight blue #354 HY06 YLR also had to wait until March 2006 before she got it delivered

I hope non of you have ever suffered from moon crater cover? on your Vee that is ;)

I love all these little additions to our knowledge of these great little cars.. thanks Graeme :approve:

This may raise further questions. [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

The previous owner of my Vee had replaced all the engine covers due to bubbling. Nice to know the cause of the problem.

Keep it up Graeme :approve:

Graeme, thanks for that little tid bit - explains why #314 wasn't sold until late 2006. There are photographs of #314 without an engine cover (second and fourth photos under Renault UK's ownership): LINK

Please keep them coming..................

Another mystery solved.

Thanks Graeme, really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us :approve:

ref #314 I hadn't spotted that the engine cover was off in that show pic so that probably is what happened to it.

i appear to have opened a large can of worms called "plaques" !
I can only say that yes as you know the UK plaques were allocated in build sequence at Southampton upon import, but therefore how does my original car which i saw in Dieppe in June 05 but wasn't fit for the road until 2006 get #305 yet the car I was driving in September 05 was #321.
My best guess is that the Dieppe factory is small compared to most and they don't have a lot of storage space for completed cars. Once they are built they are sent to distribution centres or exported. So perhaps #305 and 321 were sent to Southampton in July, allocated plaques in their build order sequence but then #305 had to be stored there until the end of the year minus an engine cover but #321 was allowed to keep its because it was needed for photos or display over the summer.
Anyway the woman who worked in RUK company car distribution liked me [cmilie=iconcheers.gif] so I got #321 when it was finished with, as my car in September.
Lucky JT then got #305 in 2006 as his 2nd Vee.

Hi Graeme

The plaque situation was covered by Jeremy T, who confided that the UK switch was not done in concise and catalogued manner.

Tbh I was a bit miffed about this as it felt like my (plaqueless) former RUK Vee had an appendage missing... but now I actually enjoy the notoriety of the mystique!

Any stories on the x2 RUK complete leather Acid Yellows? : )

And the fact that the original alloy factory plaques which were replaced by the UK 'plastic' ones were sold on e-bay a while back etc. etc.

Record keeping is for accountants anyway

Martin

This boy Graeme, knows some random bits of info... are you giving info on nsx.net too... I'll give ya a run for you money on the NSX, but leave the V6 all in expert hands..

Another great insight behind the scenes at Renault Graeme, thanks for sharing.
