brake caliper problem

morning all; have got a problem with a faulty passenger side rear caliper. the footbrake works fine but theres no handbrake function.can it be repaired and if so who is recommended . if it cant is the caliper used on anything else to save me paying ott renault prices. cheers

The handbrake is opperated via cable. Sometimes the cable can break free from the lever mechanism within the car. Mine did this when I disconnected my calipers to remove my subframe. I pulled it a little too hard and pulled it free. Should be a cheap and easy fix by the sound of it.

Scott replaced my rear passenger side calliper as it was knackered and the handbrake didn't work. Cant remember the price but it was much cheaper than Renault.

it's likely the spring in the handbrake mechanism has broken or the domed washer arrangement (which acts like a spring), hence no handbrake. This is what happened with mine last year. I stripped both my calipers and rebuilt them, it was a fecker of a job and I managed to bust all the replacement slider pin rubber gaiters. A rebuild kit for both rear calipers is about £50 from brakes international in Rochdale. They did have 2 refurbed calipers in stock at the time, I had already had mine blasted and painted otherwise I'd have bought them!

Be careful when buying a replacement, they are XM front calipers but there are about 3 different versions, so make sure you get the right one. It's Bendix and stamped: 348896 on the casting.

Unfortunately Brakes international don't sell individual parts, so you'll likely have to go to Citroen for springs etc, I was lucky, I manged to get some spares from a donor caliper off eBay.

If you don't fancy doing it yourself, remove the caliper or both rear calipers, and send them off to BigRed (they'll refurb them for about £150)

Or go to Renault and pay about £400 or £500 for one caliper.... if they have one in stock! :-)

all sorted by brake caliper specialists ltd in Long Eaton.big thanks to chris for the dirty work of calipers off and on.i can recommend him.big thanks. ps this thread goes back a while

Hey David

I'm planning on stripping all 4 off and sending them to the same place. What's the turnaround on the work? Are they pretty good or are you chasing them up?

Heard both sides
