Bosch ABS wheel sensor

LH16v

Active Member
Hi,

Anyone have a bosch ABS wheel sensor for a phase 2 16v for sale or know where I can get one for a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance.

Well if it's any help, the same Bosch ABS unit was fitted to Vauxhall (Opel) Cavaliers and Calibras... it's reasonable to think they might utilise the same wheel sensors too... and you might find more of those in your local scrappy or on ebay than 19s.

Thanks for that. Useful information. I dont really fancy paying over £100 for a sensor. Do you know which MK Cavalier? MK3?

Ummm no idea mate.

You really need to whip the wheel off and have a look. From memory the 19's sensors have a sort of black plastic housing with a singe retaining bolt.

If you can get the part number off Dialogys you can usually google the number and get a good start on cross referencing to other vehicles.

Problem is that I have not actually done any troubleshooting- the ABS light has come on and I am assuming that it is a wheel sensor that is at fault. I probably shouldnt assume....

Right...

So you start the car and the ABS light should come on. Then after a few seconds it should go off. If there's a wheel sensor fault then the abs light comes back on acouple of seconds after you start moving because it's only then that it can see a discrepancy between what the 4 sensors are saying.

If the light just comes on and stays on (without moving) then it may not be the wheel sensor after all. The abs computer module does tend to take a dousing from clumsy coolant fill ups :p

The good news is you don't need to remove the whole module, you can take the cover off and replace the electronic part on top very easily. That's what I did on my old chamade with the electronics board from a calibra.

Great advice, thanks. I guess this thread should be moved to the tech questions area ;)

The car has been standing for a while and admittedly i did top the coolant up however I don't think I got any on the ABS unit. Anyway, I'll have a look into it.

Is the ABS unit interchangeable with non 16v models?

Yeah should be.

It's very easy to check the wheel sensors on the Bosch system since they're not hard wired like on the bendix system. Just unplug them at the little yellow connectors and check the resistance. Can't remember what it's supposed to be but it doesn't really matter, as long as they're all the same then they're all good.

The ABS light comes on when you put the key in the ignition and stays on...I was thinking about giving the sensors a quick clean but from what you say its probably not the sensors that are at fault.

Could be quite difficult to get a replacement ABS ECU. Any other reasons for the light coming on?

The Bosch system is normally pretty fault free, I don't know what else could go wrong, it's perfectly possible there are other faults that would trigger the light. There's probably a technical manual buried in Dialogys somewhere.

There's loads of the complete modules on UK ebay, if you ask for just the electronics board off the top it surely wont cost that much to post to Sweden?

Well, not any bosch module, there are many different types but all I can say for sure is that one from a calibra worked for me. That system may be fitted to other cars, I dunno.

Looks like this

Take that top plastic cover off and the electronics board can be unscrewed.

Great, thanks for your help. Planning to have a look at it soon so will take it out and see if there are any visbile faults. If not then i'm going to look trying to get a replacement module.

Thanks again for the help.

Just bought the one you linked a picture to from ebay. For £30 its got to be worth a shot. Just hope that it works!

When I first noticed the problem I disconnected the battery and reconnected it to see if it made any difference, which it didnt.

I ended up buying the ABS module from a calibra and taking it apart. I then went to look at the car and realized that the battery was dead. Charged the battery started the car then realized that the ABS light had gone off.

Dont know what caused it but I now have an ABS pump and module sitting around should I have any problems in the future. Pretty annoying really but I am glad it is working.

Thanks Neal for the advice- the Calibra module looks like it would fit the 19 so I'll give that a go should the problem come back.
