Bonnet flew open at 60mph last night (Pics)

Hi Guys

Was fixing another coil last night and took it for a test drive, I must have not shut the bonnet properly and it flew right up and smashed the window and dented the roof.

Its not "that" bad, i managed to slow it down and shut it and get it home, I have not driven it for 2 weeks so 60mph could have easily been 100 so im lucky at that. Just a bit pissed off.

Anyway, weird thing happened, my STOP light flashed on 30 secs before it happened. Someone try explaining that one.

It needs a bonnet and a window, does anyone know a good company for getting dents out (roof). I was going to call scratch and dent but im not sure how that works as its wrapped.

Would I be better getting a Carbon Bonnet, or would that be a bit naff? The hinges/joints are shagged aswell so need new ones of those

any help appreciated, thanks.

Andy

sh*t Andy really sorry to read this - could have been alot worse like you say.
Where did Iain get his vee sorted at? Their also Martin Bodyshop23 on here from up your way who's really good.
Hope you get it sorted easily pal.

That is shocking !!!

Perhaps bonnet was lifting up, and the alarm switch on the slam panel made the light indicate somehow?

Did you have the bonnet catch recall done?

Plaque Number: 733
So I'm thinking Renault UK would not have notified you?
"if a vehicle is an import then the OTS does not apply, it will only flag up on RUK computer system (ICM) and they will only get a letter if the car was a UK car"
"if it is registered in the UK now and the owner takes it to a Renault Dealer, they could carry out the OTS and claim payment through Renault Customers Services rather than Renault UK Warranty."

[smilie=icon_exclaim.gif] hi there , had the same problem myself today on the way home on the M6 , outside lane at 70mph , bonnet opened !!!!!!!!!

thank god the safety catch held it till i managed to get to the hard shoulder , hadnt been playing up at all ,

going to do some extra safety measures to stop it happening ever again , antony

Andy, really sorry to hear this :(

Speak to Martin (bodyshop23) who runs JRM Coachworks. Based in Edinburgh so other side of the M8 for you but I can personally vouch for the quality of the work.

Hope you get it sorted :approve:

Guys, can you tell us whether you had the bonnet catch fixed under warranty by Renault? If so then we will all have to be extra vigilant.

these are the first cases I have heard about having this problem on a V6, Ever since all the publicity I have always made a point of checking the bonnet is tightly closed before every trip. Hope you get it sorted without too much cost or hassle and its great you manged to get it stopped without have a major accident. Scary to say the least.

If Renault did the bonnet catch change on Andy's vee and then this happened are they not liable in some way?

If the recall was done and there is proof of dealer maintenance afterwards, then I suppose there may be a case.

sorry , changed my email and got locked out the forum. Cheers for sorting that james!

Im not sure if its had the recall done but Renault did fix it and charged me when I had a problem with it sticking a while ago, to be prefectly honest Im not 100% that Its not my fault, i may not have shut it, been tinkering with it for weeks

what we thinking, get another bonnet wrapped or get a carbon one? where would one get one, Thanks for that Ian , im gonna give them a buzz

thanks guys
andy

not going to start blaming anyone, it will just fk me off and i will not get anywhere. As i said the catch on it was really bad but it was probably my fault for not checking, then again why woudl u suppose. The saftey should have caught it yea

If you want a carbon bonnet. Cheaper one from K-tec, wetlay £400. The more expensive one from streamlinecarbon which is autoclave £1200.

My car is going in to Renault Manchester next week for the complimentary upper and lower bonnet catches and all bolts and plates replaced as well. I tried to wangle a new bonnet tray out of them but they wouldn't have it ... so I settled for a brake fluid reservoir bracket !
Not bad for free ... I went in to buy the upper catch( badly rusted) but the parts man knew his onions , he was very accomodating and he suggested it I have it all done properly for free ! Brilliant service ... hmm

If your catch had been replaced by any genuine Renault garage in the past and your car was in good order otherwise , I'd take it to Renault demanding they fixed the whole lot (worth a try) ... tell them you nearly crashed and died (loudly) and it is a factory recall item...

makes more sense now , why the Renault guy couldn't wait to get mine in and kept offering me free stuff !

Andy,
You will need to get the dents in the roof sorted as it does not meet type approval for construction and use of the vehicle under the new MOT specs that were introduced in October last year. The streangth of a cars bodyshell is underpinned by the roof structure, an mot tester that is not completly knowledgable about the new specs of the MOT may just play it safe and fail the car on what on the face of it lookes like a minor problem.

Nigel.

[smilie=doubt.gif] [smilie=doubt.gif] not sure if it has been sorted by renault ? will have to check with my local dealer :ihatpcs: :ihatpcs:

Mine went in for a new clutch this morning at local Reno Garage. Spoke to the guy and he checked the system and sure enough...mine never went in for the recall on this. He said he would change the whole lot for nowt.

Coolio

too late for me, the ren garage that I got mine done in are shocking. I would rather pay to get it done than give it back to them, terrible creatures
