Bad sounds from my gearbox...

Hi all!

During some cone driving for about 3 months ago, a bad noice started to appear during sharp turns, it was like a high frequent noice that follows the speed of the gearbox.
I only hear it when I do sharp turns.

I'f I put the gearbox in neutral and do the same turn, the noice isn't there.

This weekend I was driving at a track in Sweden, and I listened carefully so the noice wouldn't increase.
What I heard it didn't..

The next morning it was very cold outside, like 5-6 degrees, when I started the engine and started to move slowly it really screamed :/
After a while when the engine got some heat up, the noice dissapeared though.

What I've heard from a Renault Mechanic that I know, there have been some problems with the gearboxed used in the Vee?

Could it be the differential?

if it was the differential i'd imagine you'd hear it all the time, from what you described it sounds like something to do with the belts or pulleys to me IMHO

But its angry and mechanical, I'm pretty shure that a belt and pulley cant create that kind of noice :(
And why would it only sound when I turn sideways?

bcos i'm pretty sure that the powersteering pump is powered via the Aux belt so if its a pulley thats on its way out or the belts loose the noise does get loud until warmed up, i get the same problems with my mk1 clio williams due to a pulley on its way out

Could be belts as on-off throttle driving through cones could cause the aux belt to slip and squeel/screetch. This can also happen when the ambient temperaturs is cold and the belt is tighter around the pulleys ...

Belt noises can be quiet common ... My solution (never done it on the Vee though) is to test it by spraying some water in the belt to see if the noise stops. If this proves to be the case then either asjusting belt tension or lubricating the belt with some WD-40 can resolve it.

The noice are getting worse and worse.
Its screams when the car is cold, gets better when its hot, and the noice appears when I turn. At least its about 80% louder when turning.

Guess I'll have to hand it in to a mechanic

I had something similar kind of howling when turning a very sharp corner when hot after a gearbox oil changed by my Renault dealer using Shell.

I changed the gearbox oil to the Renault recommended one ELF for PK6 gearbox and this solved the problem and also made the gearbox change much better.

Have you tried a gearbox oil change yet?

I don't own a v6 but the MK1 mx5 I once owned was near impossible to get into second gear from first, it went from near impossible when cold to just bad when warm.
I changed the gearbox oil and it was like having a new gearbox. After that I replaced the gearbox oil fairly regular. Although this is not directly related I can say for one thing an oil change will be a cheap way of seeing if it rectifies the problem as it made such a difference to mine, although I'm sure you know if you are tracking your car the gearbox oil is going to want changing much more frequently.
