Back firing noise from the air filter!!!!

Hi folks iam new on here and have had my MK1 V6 a couple of months now. The thing is the car seems to stutter low down in the rev range and then seems to clear after about 2000RPM. A few time i get a back firing noise from the air filter and then the car takes off as you would expect. Can anyone help. The acr is totally standard.

tried taking it apart too see if anything is blocking it? or is the filter really dirty?
