Anyone Ever Had An Ill Fitting Fuel Cap

I don't remember my fuel cap ever being 'i'll fitting', but it is at present, and the house seems to be filling up with petrol fumes (through the utility door, into the kitchen and hall way).

Been out all afternoon, just got indoors and the house is full of petrol fumes, there is nothing else in the garage that has petrol in it, so can only be the car.

After having a good look around the car the only place I can find a very strong smell of petrol coming from is the fuel cap, and this doesn't seem to be fitting 'flush' any more. I haven't a clue what has made it move / fit skew-wiff :s

Any ideas, or anyone else experienced any thing like this?

Kind regards, Steve.

Yeah, Michelle reckons it's always sat on the piss, just me I guess because I don't look at the car that often!

Lol.

Still doesn't explain the petrol smell in the garage and house :s

Stevie boy... the filler cap has been wonky on both my vee's. Infact, every vee I have ever noticed the filler cap has sat wonky, especially mk2's for some reason. The only vee who's filler cap that sat true had been adjusted, presumably by the link above, to sit correctly.
Could the smell be coming from elsewhere on the car? Baring in mind it's just recently been used.. the poor thing could be in shock ya know.. ;)

I have found the petrol leak, and thankfully its nothing to do with the Vee :approve:

One of my beloved urchins had decided to flip the fuel cut off switch on my generator in the corner of the garage. TBH I had totally forgotten about it, and suddenly thought, I wonder if its coming from the genny - sure enough I pull it out. Coming out of the breather pipes is a small drip and a tiny puddle on the floor [smilie=doubt.gif] .

Mystery solved [smilie=icon_cheers.gif]

Just glad it wasn't 'Silvery'.

Bloody kids!!!!!!!! :livid:

Old Wayne pointed this out to me before.
He said that the outer ring was often misaligned due to the padding layer underneath. Easily remedied.

Mine was out but as the car is completly stripped getting ready for paint, I thought I'd have a look at it, the alinement is mainly down to the gaskets but mine was also bad due to the fact the filler pipe were it goes into the tank was starting the come off !! [smilie=icon_exclaim.gif]

That said the car was hit hard on the filler side, so it may of moved it a bit, but if your's seems to changed postion check the tightness of the filler pipe to fuel tank joint , its just on top of the tank.

I repostioned mine and the caps now 95% in postion again. :)
