Air con Problem

New Member
Hi all hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine we are having at the moment. I Have a problem with the air con in the vee and was after some advice concerning it . I normally notice an engine pitch drop when activating the switch as this takes a bit of power from the altenator but nothing happens and hence no real ice cold air from the vents inside. Its been a while since i used the air con so i am hoping its just a case of a re-gas. So am i right in thinking that if there is no gas in the unit the pump will not work? or should it still take some power ???

Hi jim, you are correct, no gas in the system or a low gas pressure/volume and the system will not start up, it needs a certain amount of pressure to activate the system. the reason it will not pull the electo magnetic clutch in is because the compressor is lubed with a product called pag gas, this is in suspension in the gas, so no gas no lube, soon no compressor.
you could try a can of gas from your local auto store, about ten quid, but have heard that halfords have a deal on for regas at around 40 quid. remembering it is illegal for anyone to regas your car knowing there is a leak, so they may charge for that service first. get a quote and ring round.
don,t go to a refrigeration engineer as they usually do not replace the pag oil, you need to get the exact spec for the amount from reno and add this as it is regassed. the spec may be on the front valance. hope this helps.

Hi

Most cars loose gas over the years, through the crimped joints and seals, so recharging every 5 years or so is not unusaual.

But you may of had a stone hole the the condensor in front of the water radiator, so you may need a ultra vilot gas putting in first, they then go over the car with a UV lamp and any leak will show up with this lamp.

If you have a hole in the condensor they they are the same a laguna 3.0 ( 90% sure !)and are about £100

Regas around here is £55

good luck

Steve

Thanks fellas apprieciate the input i will get it re gased next week . There is a decent air con company close by who will inject a nitrogen based gas in before and then check for leaks using a pen type device . [smilie=thanks.gif]

Is your air con gas level runs too low or you haven't run the air con for too long the seals on the compressor will dry up and you may have to replace the compressor for about 600 quid.

Replace air con gas and lube at regular intervals and make sure it is kept topped up. Also make sure you let your air con run for a while from time to time, this will keep the seals lubricated and stop them drying up.

With Rob about the compressor seals. So many people that don't use their A/C during winter can cause seals to dry and split under pressure. If pressure is too low in the system a low pressure switch holds the system off till correct working pressure is achieved. Being a A/C engineer myself changing car compressors are a job an half hence huge prices! No re-charging if there's a leak tho! Companies have been fined up to £25000 or a few months in the cells for that! Lol.

All the best

Hi i had the vee tested a while ago and it was a case of no gas . Had the system regased plus oil etc and only got charged 40 quid so a cheap result [smilie=yay.gif] Glad i had it done as it was a scorcher today . thanks for all the advice.

Glad all is well with your air con Jim.

Hey pellsaturn, how come there are such strict laws about filling leaking aircon? if the gas poisonous / flamable or something? Just wondered.

Cheers :)

hi rob.. basically it all boils down to depletion of the o zone layer around the earth. There is loads of scientific evidence that A/C engineers around the world instead of reclaiming gas properly into a cylinder they are just letting it go to atmostpher.. So techincally if your just filling a system back up that you know has got a leak its classed as letting go to atmostphere as it will eventually!. Boring sh*t ant it, but thats what i have to deal with on day to day. Oh and you have to certified to handle refrigerant gases also. Tip for everyone there!

all good jim stay COOL!! :approve:

Ah cheers, save the whale and all that eh. Just wondered.

Gonna get mine checked out coz just got the car, air con button doesn't seem to make much difference on or off! However if you the dial set to the coldest position it's really cold anyway. Hope it gets re-gassed ok.

Thanks again :)

does yours have the turny dial to set the temperature or do you have the digital climate control? if you have the turning dial always make sure when you turn the A/C on that its all the way round on the blue. lol. my old man does that turn the A/C on and wonders why i dont work coz it sat halfway. or if its digital you probably wont feel a difference till you set it at 22. but it all depends on the outside temperature..

Good Luck!! :approve:

Mines a mk1 so has the turny blue to red dial.

When I turn the dial all the way to blue the air comming out seems really cold with the air con turned off, bu when I turn the air con when the dial is all the way to blue it doesn't seem to make hardly any difference, but the air con light comes on?

I think I'll get it re-gassed and re-lubed and see what happens, if there's a problem they should spot it at that stage shouldn't they?
