Advised work this winter

Ali

New Member
Morning all.

So this winter will be #46's 2nd belt change - first by me incidentally!

I'm firstly deliberating over who's going to do the work – Can any of the Scottish owners suggest a decent garage?

Car is now on 46k miles, what should I be doing at the same time as the belts?

Clutch?
Box rebuild?
Manifolds & Exhaust?
Water Pump?
Other belts?

Other issue is it’s throwing quite a lot of oil and fuel out the back, could this be valve seats/guides?

Advice please

Ali

I would say its worth changing the water pump and if its still on the same clutch possible that. I am lead to believe they are not expense parts but engine out to get to them

Deffo worth doing the clutch and water pump Ali, as already posted they are relatively cheap items to buy, so really a no brainier whilst engine out :approve:

I'd be more concerned about the oil and fuel coming out the back before anything else if I was you and get it checked out ASAP ,sounds abit serious to me :(

It's always thrown out oil/fuel, although I've never had to top it up?! That's 20k miles...

If its been throwing oil out for 20k and you have NEVER topped it up it cannot possibly be engine oil, there would be none left!
How many miles has the car done?
I think before spending any money i would try to find the problem here, if its not engine oil it could be raw fuel, in both cases it needs sorting. raw fuel will wear an engine very quickly but the emissions light would permanently be on! have you decatted this?
I do have a spare pair of heads and a spare motor if it does come to that.
Does the exhaust smell of fuel?

1, I change the oil every year.
2, 46k
3, Nope, not decatted and doesn't really smell. But rear window is smeary and people behind do get covered!

Sounds bad! if it was the engine the fact that there is so much oil should throw up a fault on the lambda probes (oxygen sensors). i had a driveshaft boot with a small hole in, this gave a lot of oil mist out the back and covered the back window, thats the first place i would check!
If not the gearbox check the p/steering fluid, the oil must be coming from somewhere if its not the motor. drop the back tray off and have a good look round. btw, topping the power steering up is a real hoot!
Let us know how you get on.

There is an oil leak coming from somewhere and there is alot of oil around the shafts the subframe and the tray...Will have a look this winter. Considering the punishment she took at the ring i'm surprised she runs at all! :)

could be gearbox oil, and breather poss blocked, that would throw oil around the gearbox side of engine bay, but I wouldn't think traffic behind would get any spray from you. I would say un-burnt fuel is whats coming out of the exhaust it will not be oil it would smoke like a tw4t all the time

If it is enough fuel to coat cars behind you then you really do face the possiblity of bore washing it! Doubt its that though as you'd notice it smells richer than other cars. Might be a valve guide or something that let's a fine ammount in. Ie not enough to make a noticable smoke haze but enough to pass through the engine unburnt and make a mess of the rear. I know when a union on my PAS pump went Pete Tong it made a right mess. Again didn't smoke too badly but went everywhere.

Ali, I'm in the same boat as you, slightly more miles at 56k but I'm having second belt change done over winter. I'll also be doing Clutch, water pump, and cam dephasers which are noisy when the car is upto temperature at idle.

My car smells oily in the cabin, but I have no visible leaks, no smearing on the tail and its used no oil in a year since last change?!?

Be interesting to if the car still runs power on the RR...Felt sluggish at the ring especially top end! But then again i always had a passenger!

I would look at Power steering, Have had to replace one of the unions so far due to leaking, And that does coat the back of the car very well ,Even if the union like mine was at the front of car !! Good luck
