A must-watch for anyone interested in Le Mans (the movie) and the Le Mans 24-race

Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans (BBC Documentary): https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... or=ES-211-[30721_PANUK_DIV_11_IPL_Recommends_DEF]-20200321-[bbcfour_stevemcqueenlemansandtheman_filmfactual] Note that this is only available on BBC iPLayer for 2 more months.

A fascinating documentary, with previously unseen footage and recordings, shot/recorded during the filming of Le Mans, and the trials and tribulations that Steve McQueen, and the rest of the cast and crew, went through during the course of making that film.

I think it is worth watching even if you are not a fan of the film or racing if only to understand the level of risk-taking and 'disregard' for safety that was quite prevalent during those times. Don't think we will ever see such a film ever again! Fascinating indeed.....and my utmost respect for those who took part in the making of this film. SM being nicknamed the 'King of Cool' is quite fitting. :salut:

It’s interesting that the King of Cool had such a pull in Hollywood that he would be allowed to film and burn cash for 6 months on his vanity project without a script. Unbelievable.
There are similarities with the 1967 TV series “ The Prisoner” which was a Patrick Mcgoohan vanity project. Mcgoohan admitted that he didn’t know how to end it.

Le Mans is still the best motor racing action film ever. David Piper is still with us aged 89. He looked old when Le Mans was filming . He lives in Windlesham

Brilliant film.

I was supposed to be driving there for the race in June but it's been pushed back to September now for obvious reasons - roll on September!

Thank you Dulan. : )

Indeed, with social distancing / shielding in place, any little gems like this suggestion would be most welcome.

Indeed Kett. Just think, today, no way would one be allowed to run a car with bulky camera equipment during any race, let alone Le Mans 24-hours!

My laptop is lulling me into a sense of normality. I am used to working from home, but it is now getting difficult with the sun being out and not being able to get out and socialise as one is normally accustomed to! However, off to Scott's in the next two weeks to drop off [v6plaque]002[/v6plaque] for its major service (cambelt etc), so will be able to have a catchup and engage 'car talk' then, albeit standing 2 metres apart. :)

i just spoke to Scott this morning to order a new starter. He said he was 'vee' busy with lots of Vee's in the workshop. Am going to get him to do my own cambelts later in the year.

i just started watching the Steve McQueen documentary - good so far but the wife made me turn it off last night so she could watch baking-with-ice-dancing- got-talent or something. If you want to learn more about the film, there is a book called French Kiss with Death published in 1999 which is just about making the film. Its really fascinating with loads of period behind the scenes photos like this

The best camera car ever, a GT40 with the roof chopped off....

Thanks will check the book out. 'French Kiss with Death' is quite apt as a title.

The GT40 with the roof chopped off is quite cool, but wonder how wobbly it was when negotiating chicanes or highspeed corners.
