A better car than the V6

Had a test drive in the new Porsche 997 Carrera 4S today and I am sorry to say that it is a much better driver and handler than the V6 255! :smt007
Drove it across country in South Devon on slightly damp and icy roads in an area which has a few of my favourite quiet, undulating and twisting, country driving roads.
Mike T, eat your heart out boy cause even you would not have caught me on these roads!
This route has opposite camber bends where I normally have to back off in the V6 for fear of loosing the back end - the Porsche fealt so confident that it encouraged me to press-on even faster.
Now for the negatives; heavy fuel consumption and the standard none PCCB carbon brakes are poor.
Submitted to the forum in the interests of objectivism, oh, and pure driving pleasure. :smt020

before i decided to go 4 my clio i drove the 997 s hard around bristol and found it boring no real fill at all i wanted a drivers car i also tried an m3 csl the light one that was awsome but i decided that the v6 255 was the best of the lot, and money never came into it .

I use a 997 4s and a 996GT2 - two of the finest handling cars in the world but a little slow in acceleration!
I live in Reading - they are more common here (as PCGB is here) than MR2's.
The GT2 is going in favour of a loader Boxster S!!!
If you think the 4s handles try a Boxster S - it kills it.
Values are dying at the moment as well to much used stock about.
Still a good car though

Mike, I would love to road test a Boxster S but I don't have the trade contacts that you do.
I wish Porshe had the b*lls to offer the same scheme that Renault did - pay the insurance for the week-end and get to drive it without a Sales person riding shotgun.

On the plus side, my local OPC know what a V6 255 is about, which I think shows they are a little more 'PetrolHeads' than my local Renault dealer.

Anyway, probably anything with less power than the Bugatti feels slow to you!!!

997 4S demonstrators are about, most are a bit bling spec but if you want to buy somebody elses spec, then yes a few are around.

Mike at Sterlings has superb used 996 stock from 25K.

PCGB are a client of mine so we "borrow" cars quite frequently.

We designed the OPC's

Mike

I should hope it is quicker – it costs a fortune. But would you really want to pay that money to look like a wanker with so little imagination.

I'd rather have my Vee than a lot of other more expensive kit out there. I like the look of the GT3 but even if I had the money it is not what I would buy.

Obviously biased; I think you have the more 'petrolhead' car compared to your pal.

Sorry, didn't mean to post that with my face hidden. :)

Hey Ant, my conclusion - after having driven both cars - was the Porshe 911/997 Carrera 4S is the better car.
After all, you pays your money and you choose what you want to drive!
I am not knocking the Renault Clio V6 - and I will still own one when I get the Porshe - but why don't you chance a test drive in the Carrera 4S [or for that matter, any other 4WD sports car] and let us know your opinion then. It just may have changed!

Is that why Jezza Clarkson [Top Queer] doesn't like Porshe, because he doesn't want to look like a wanker? After all, he drives a Ford! :P

 Had mis-read you were test driving it.

No question it is the better car and one of the most capable cars around – I just find them a bit normal/clinical/polished (for a supercar  ) and because of their reputation they seem to be the default choice when the city bonuses are handed out. Then again, I was at a Pistonheads meet today where 360s seemed common.

Still love the 993, the 996 was a bit of a let down visually and the 997 looks the part again. When you getting it?

Waiting for a build slot.
But hope it doesn't turn in to how long I was waiting on the Morgan list for my +8 - 7 years!
