80+ driving ban...

Surely a retest at the very least!!

Sat in the petrol station when an old guy tries to fit his car in a far too small gap between a car and our Vee.

The owner of the other car tried to help him get through (madness as he was on his way to getting in his car and leaving anyway) and was signalling him through when he realised that they had hit his car and had about 1cm to play with against ours!! At this point I'm sweating sitting in the passenger seat. To my dismay he starts to reverse and gets even closer to ours!

It took various shouts and finally a thump on his bonnet by mr Ed and the other driver to get him to stop moving until the other car drives off.

Then as he goes to move he rolls back .... Thankfully he didn't touch ours but that was pure luck not judgement!!

:(

Totally agree, even a regular eye test connected to the driving license at that age would be a step forward!

Could of just been dressed as a man ;)

Yeah they are sly like that......anything to get away from the kitchen, some of them even have their own shoes.
"what is the world coming to"?

Nigel.

I nearly had a heart attack when the old dude's car got all close and personal with ours. Felt a bit mean shouting at him but better that than making a claim on his insurance :s

I'm an Optometrist - and the law regarding ageing drivers is disgraceful.

Many of the these guys should be banned, but the law requires self-appraisal - which is wholly inadequate.

Given there's little statistical evidence about this group - they get away with it. Most clinical current studies are evaluating acquired disorders... and not degenerative vision performance.

Yep, about 2 years ago an old Guy drove straight at me very near my house.........he got out of his car as he slammed the breaks on and started cursing me etc etc.

As I started to realise what he was shouting, my jaw dropped.

He thought I was on his side of the road and driving dangerously - I then pointed out he was actually on my side of the road.

As he spun round to take a double look, the penny dropped..........I later heard via a member of his family the Guy handed in his driving licence a few days later.

Reminds me of my old neighbour, he was driving until he was 90.

Like a lot of old people he was hard of hearing, so you`d hear him driving up the road, clutch slipping as he hit the rev limiter in each gear as he couldnt hear the engine. I remember him saying he got through 3 clutches in the space of about 12,000 miles.

He used to drive into his garage so quickly that he used to normally run into something at the back of it, so the car was covered in dents even though it had hardly been used.

He actually got done for speeding once, driving to the local shop. He literally got 4 houses down the road and was clocked doing 47 in a 40.

In the end he pulled pulled out on someone on a roundabout, writing his car off, and decided that was enough, so never bought another car. About time too really as he was not safe.

Oh boy! I ber that would have been a very close call, and had you on the edge of your seat!

Glad to hear that no damage was done.
