anybody in lincolnshire got a 5 gordini, want to poke my head under the bonnet to see what way the distributer faces, and if i could put a electronic one on mine, going to put old carb back on the 8s 1400 gordini engine, throwing the dellortos away driving me mad.
i have that set up in the back of mine, but the carbs are playing up. there is a place in brigg but he wants to put it on his rolling road, problem is it dont roll very well.
Lots of options on Dizzy bits. Lumenition, Pertronix and powerspark to name 3. There is a big D small D drive system on these and it is easy to get it 180 degrees out, ultimately it does not matter if you convert the dizzy, there is no condenser to hit the rocker cover and you can fit it any way you like. Salv Sacco In Wolverhampton would convert your dizzy and test it for you, well worth the money. The carbs would probably benefit from a good clean out and an overhaul kit, before trying out any set up.
Make sure the Master cyl to servo is bled first. Worth adding a bleed nipple on the inlet to the servo for this purpose. It may be the cylinder on the servo is stuck . How long since it was working last?? just need to be slow and methodical to work through. I never used servos on my 8's if it's all in good nick the brakes are quite good on them.
looking in the back of the renault 8 with the dellortos manifold on, the distributor is offset, but looking at the 5 gordini with the original carb setup its running alongside the head, been looking at engines on youtube.
That does not make sense. Can you get a picture. It's the same Dizzy with or without Dellortos. You don't need the vac unit with side draughts. That's the only visible difference. As I've said before it is very easy to get the dizzy on 180 degrees out on this engine due to the leg length of the dizzy. Looking at pictures isn't a help if someone didn't put the drive gear in as the manual suggests. I never bothered with that myself and set it from first principals. Set cyl1 nearest flywheel to tdc, use a welding wire or knitting pin down the plughole. You really need the rocker cover off as to check No1 is firing the rockers will be loose on that cylinder, if not turn the engine another turn and that should be it. Take the dizzy cap off and see where the rotor arm is pointing it should be at one of the pins the lead of which should go no No1 if not make it so by changing the lead. Then turning clockwise when viewed from above will be 3,4 and finally 2. If the rotor arm is not pointing at a pin, loosen the clamp and turn the body until it does, this is now No1 then repeat the last step. The Haynes manual will show you the method to set the timing statically. I usually just swing the dizzy until it starts and then set dynamically with a timing light. There's not much to it really.
RENAULT4.CO.UK THERE IS A PICTURE OF A COPLETE 5 GORDINI ENGINE, IF YOU LOOK IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL MANIFOLD AND CARB ON IT, IF YOU LOOK IT THE ADVANCE & RETARD IT RUNS ALONG THE HEAD WHICH IS NOT THE SAME WITH A WEBER MANIFOLD ITS AT A DIFFERENT ANGLE SO WHEN I PUT THE ORIGINAL CARB ON IT HAVE I GOT TO FIGURE OUT THE ONE 1 3 4 2 OR KEEP MAKING A LOAD BANG, AND UPSETING THE NATIVES.
If by the advance retard you mean the Vacuum capsule with the pipe coming off it . it's position is meaningless if someone has moved the drive dog under the dizzy it is a gear which can be rotated each tooth giving about 30 degrees
IT looks like this
It's a big D small D type as in this pic
Small D on top half big D on bottom half. Easy to get a half turn out with a long leg dizzy. Done it myself. The bangs suggest wrong timing or firing order.
