5 bonnet catch

Ah yes, a common problem! The release cable has most likely fallen off the catch. There should be a captive washer thingy that stops it falling off but it's usually missing. You'll need to remove the front grille and find a long lever that you can use to undo the catch from the front by reaching in all the way from the grille area. Not easy but the catch can be flicked upwards to release it. You can also undo the nuts for the bonnet hinges and lift up the bonnet from the front of the car to give you a tiny bit more access. Don't be tempted to lever the bonnnet up or to use your arm to release the catch. That's how I ended up slightly denting my bonnet!

Once you have released the catch, refit the cable. Use a cable tie to stop it falling off again. Just put it on the end of the sticky outy part and you should be fine.

The metal bit at the bottom is the bit you need to flick up to release the catch. Blue thing is the cable tie.

In fact you will definitely need to undo the bonnet hinge bolts. Go very carefully so you don't put extra leverage on the bonnet and end up creasing it.

when mine refused to open in the 1980s drilled a small hole in the bonnet opened it and covered the hole with a dimond renault badge
just incase it failed again. Mine, the cable had not come off,
cannot remember the real falt.
Now I take the catch off if I am leving the car standing, or working under the bonnet just incase I have seen broken catches and bonnets can slam shut.
Think my cable snapped.
